Hey, the above mentioned article just showed up in our local paper today. Honestly, the whole thing is about so much more than just college! Where else can you get instant advice/information on almost anything you can imagine? And drinks galore with no hangover? What's not to like?

I found the way to wean myself off - booked a cruise for May - now I'm only on here once a day but I'm on the cruise board five times daily! Can't tell if that means I'm moving on or off the hard stuff. (That board has the same initials so I feel right at home.) Now if I could only find a way to combine the two...

I think if you take a cruise above the Arctic Circle, you might lose internet connection and have to do something else.

Marilyn, I was addicted to that forum last spring ... but it was easy to stay off it after the cruise! My in laws paid for the cruise (we paid for shore excursions) ... and we are poor due to college costs ... so it's not like I'm going on another cruise anytime soon!!

Where are you going?

Kelsmom - that other forum is very helpful, just like this CC. We're going to Bermuda on a 5 day cruise out of Bayonne (which seems very surrealistic) and taking DS. It's 2 days after we bring him home from sophomore year - one of the giant boats that has the ice rink and climbing wall and minigolf course.

It's a splurge with two more years of college to cover but he hasn't had a good vacation in a few years. Not to mention me! I'm hoping none of us goes near a computer although he'll probably have his since we're visiting the inlaws after (they're not paying).

I'll probably stop visiting that other forum after we get back and I post my review and upload some pictures and give some advice based on my vast 5 day experience and see what other people have to say about it not to mention that my mom is coincidentally going on a different cruise from Montreal to Boston at the same time so I have to see what people said about her cruise - I'm hooked, aren't I ;)

OOOh, I love Bermuda! That's where we honeymooned. Enjoy!! (Take the patch)

boards.cruisecritic.com very addictive.

I have no cruise booked :-( at this time

been to Bermuda 2x though and loved it.
Do not miss Horseshoe beach.

Oh and those sunsets over the water..... I love cruising!

For the kids, it is "woe is me"<<

Actually, thinking about it--it should be "woe is I", although I don't know anyone who actually says it that way...

I thought I was losing it last night - H and I went out for a late dinner and I kept hearing people from neighboring tables talking about acceptance rates, colleges, most difficult year ever... Anyway, I realized what week it is and that families had gone out to celebrate decisions. I wasn't hallucinating after too many hours spent reading about colleges, after all. Whew!

ellemenope -- there's a very funny grammar book by Patricia O'Conner entitled "Woe is I."

LOL..... reading that article and all the responses is like looking in a mirror.
Yep! count me in
Sincerely,
Another CC addict

Oh CC is not limited to your own kids. There are young nieces and nephews coming up, neighbor kids, all of them in desperate need of our interventions.

For $25. a month, you can foster a kid, too. They send his report card to post on your refrigerator.

Plenty of sources. Definitely.

Paying3tuitions, I admit it ... I "foster" a kid I got to know while sub teaching ... and I don't even have to pay for the privilige! He sends me grades & even graded papers (when he is feeling particularly proud). He is currently hoping to transfer to Yale. He called me the other day to tell me he had a dream that he got in & he bought me a "Yale Mom" hoodie. Better yet, though, he has promised to share his future i-banking haul with me! :)

Passed my 4th anniversary here some months ago; still have a compulsive need to give advice and try to steer people (mainly kids) away from obsessions and into more sensible thinking. Nothing, however, compared to those who are making this a life's work like suzievt, carolyn and jmmom.

Oh My God... you are right, people ARE practically BEGGING me to help them get into college by staying on these forums and doling out my wisdom. Hmmm, better not let them down. It's almost like community service! Yeah, that's the ticket!

ellemenope -- there's a very funny grammar book by Patricia O'Conner entitled "Woe is I."<<

All right--ONE person who says Woe is I. I think grammar and punctuation make very funny books (seriously). I'll have to try to find Patricia O'Conner's book.

Wasn't there a humor book about punctuation that came out within the last 5 years? I just remember the front of the book had a panda on it.

Pretty sure you're talking about "Eats, Shoots & Leaves."

I subscribe to goErie.com - It's my hometown newspaper. But I've been busy recently and haven't had time to read it much. How fun to see it linked, even if the original article was from Chicago. That's neat that the article was syndicated - how cool that someone figured out how to make money from their addiction! :D

If you liked "Eats, Shoots & Leaves," you might also enjoy Bill Walsh's "Lapsing Into a Comma." Glad I finally found a forum where an editor with a twisted sense of humor can be useful!

To you "lifers" out there from a newbie: Does the need (dare I say "rush") to hang out on CC wear off after a while or does it simply morph into a more manageable form?

I knew I was in trouble this morning when #2 asked, "Um, mom, need any help with the laundry?" It was only then that I noticed she was shivering in outgrown summer pajamas, and I could detect remnants of spaghetti sauce from dinner last night on #1's jeans, apparently the cleanest pair she could find.

My husband has a new sign for me when I start spouting what I have learned here. He holds up his two hands, each in the shape of the letter "C" (ok, one is backwards).

My "real" friends and family have absolutely no interest in this college drama! When I voice my doubts or concerns they trivialize with comments like, "Good lord, stop worrying. She'll get in everywhere and get scholarships." I am an alien and I have found my mothership!

Do you ever wonder if there are other "closet" CCers in your town and one of these days you will post something they recognize and you will be outed? I think there are MANY people who just don't want to admit to their neighbors or friends that they are as obsessed as they truly are.

OK, I am now strapping on the gear to scale Mt. Dirty Laundry so DCFS doesn't come and investigate me for child neglect.

Thanks for being there/here!
