Gosh, what a can of worms I opened. I was corrected from 2 spaces to one halfway through my (1st) writing career and it was tough as blazes to switch..there's something so satisfying about that double hit of the space bar, indicating that one more sentence has been moved from the stress-about-it-now to stress-about-it-later column. Now I try to keep to one space no matter what, because otherwise I get 'full stop confusion."

Run, Curm, Run ;)

Adults playing virtual tag. Now how can I question the online games my children play?

Just discovered this thread, read the whole thing and burst into hysterical laughter a half a dozen times while reading. So glad that I am home alone. I have been addicted since last March when I first discovered CC (by googling for discussion about FA for a specific school). It's amazing how fast the addiction can set in. So glad that FAFSA, IDOC and income tax had already been submitted, or else we'd still be waiting for that FA package.

I, too, am a comma, punctuation, and grammar nut. And no one will ever get me to stop using 2 spaces after each sentence. 46 years of typing one way can't be changed. My son (a hs senior) told me awhile back about the one-space thing and I didn't believe him.

Keep on posting, all of you amazing people. Besides the great information, CC is extremely entertaining.

1 space instead of 2???? Where have I been for 20, 30 years? I thought CC was trying to save memory when my posts were changed to 1 space between sentences. Now I find out that I was being corrected.

speaking of typing...

Remember having to center things on a page by counting the number of characters in the title (or whatever you were centering) and then back spacing from the center 1/2 the number of spaces.

My son looked at me like I'd grown a third eye when I told him about that....

Does anybody hyphenate anymore? Now we have word wrap or that thing that puts extra spaces in so the line is filled......

And speaking of typing - triplicate with carbon paper - nuff said.

Grown a third eye! ROFLMAO!

Oh yes, sueinphilly -- I remember all that in typing. When I worked on my Jr. High (not Middle School) newspaper, we had to right-justify articles by adding spaces here and there in each line of words. Erasable typing paper was a pretty big deal, but the whole IBM Selectric typewriter with correction tape was an amazing leap forward.

Not to mention the advent of the 'ball-element' typewriters instead of those hammer keys that jangled and tangled whenever you went fast. That's why we have the QWERTY keyboards...by messing up the order of the letters, humans type a little slower which solves the tangled key problems. I've tried the 'alphabetical order' keyboards but somethings cannot be altered...like my fingertips knowing automatically where all the letters are in QWERTY.

I earned all of my spending money in college typing papers for people -- talk about ah obsolete profession! 50 cents a page. Lots of centering titles by backspacing and counting. Lots of cursing when miscalculating the bottom of the page. Erasable paper was the second coming. I added spelling correction gratis -- should have charged!

Did that book ever get published that some of us got solicited to provide interviews for, a year or so ago???
[/quote]
Yes, it was... we all tallied up our quotes to see who got quoted the most. (I had 4 or 5 in there, but someone else on CC beat me ;) )Book How to Survive Getting Your Kid Into College It ain't great literature, and some of the quotes got kind of mangled, but we're proud to have represented the CC community. Sister-in-law with high school kid was happy (?) to get a copy for Christmas. I didn't feel the need to keep one. ;)

I've tried to change my name, also, to no avail! I was clueless when I signed up....

ah yes, but after all this time the carbon copy has left its imprint even in today's world, the infamous CC and BCC.

I bet alot of kids don't realize the origin of that

I hear there are about 400 of them available down in San Angelo, Texas.

I have to revive this thread because I committed the CC sin of referring to my daughter as my "D" yesterday when I was talking to a neighbor. I called her my "D"! Has anyone else done this? The last time I remember something similar happening is when I used to dictate everything when I practiced law - including punctuation. In my first opening statement, I said, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, comma ..."

I missed this thread when I was on vacation last week! Made me laugh OL! Kids and DH think it's strange to read these sites. I just laugh! (although they love what I find out!)

Thanks, Timely. We have a bunch of foster children in Cook County, Illinois.

cartera45, too funny! But I actually used the "DD" in an unrelated email recently. I can relate :)
