Read Important Why You Should Come To Duke!!!

Ok. sorry for all caps but I honestly want to give you my honest feedback about Duke for y’all making college decision choices.

I was in the same situation as you were last year. I choose Duke over Penn, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, UChicago, etc. The only school I would have chosen over Duke would be Stanford, in which I was on the waitlist.

Number one point: I ABSOLUTELY F***ING LOVE DUKE.

Myths about Duke:

Filled with Elitist Rich Kids

Yes, Duke has rich kids. Rich people have power. Therefore, it’s good that powerful people choose Duke because of all the schools they can attend they choose Duke. Simple as that. Yes, there are students here whose parents own huge investment banks, are descendents of yadeeda, invented the wheel… etc. This just shows how great Duke is. Honestly, if rich people didn’t go here, then Duke wouldn’t be as great of a school… do you see rich kids going to Bob Jones University? There you go. Main point: YOURE GOING TO FIND RICH KIDS AT ANY PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITY. HARVARD? Princeton? Yale? Full of them. Duke is no exception.

Don’t let rich white kids get to you and take away the four best years of your life. Seriously. Get over that.

And yes, there are snobby rich kids who think they’re all that, but why waste your time with them? let them think they’re cool because they have a building named after them and get on with your life.

racial segregation

I do see this. And honestly, I do think it’s a bit more prevalent at Duke. But in the world, you’re going to see people segregating according to income level, religion, culture, and yes, race. The people who complain about it are people who complain about it and don’t actually step outside of their social group and get to know people. I’m friends with people who are black, white, asian, hispanic, and everything in between. the people who complain about duke’s segregation are people who are too scared to actually befriend someone of another race. it’s only racially segregated if you make it racially segregated. nobody has ever not let me “chill” with them simply because of my race. people just prefer to stay with their own race.

hard classes

DUKE IS HARD. HARD. HARD. HARD. Let me repeat: HARD. but let me repeat again: It’s POSSIBLE TO SUCCEED. Premed/engineering/econ/math/science courses are designed to weed people out like flies… therefore, it’s not unusual for the average grade to be a C or C+. but you have to understand that DUKE HAS TO DO THIS. You don’t want people who are not gifted at econ to be representing Duke at firms like Goldman Sachs and such. You don’t want people who really won’t work their butts off to become doctors. You don’t want a surgeon performing a life/death operation on your child to be lacking in anything… in fact, you want the best, right? Duke weeds people out so the people who make it are in fact the best in that field. That is why Duke is #6 (correct me if I’m wrong but it’s pretty high up there) of the most recruited for grad schools and businesses. They know Duke grads are brilliant.

Nothing to do outside of Duke

Honestly, you’re not goign to have time to venture outside of Duke. There’s ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON CAMPUS. in fact tooo many… i always get 3 facebook invitations a day or so inviting me to this or that. and i always feel bad rejecting them because I have a lot of work and am involved in so many things that I don’t have time to go to all-campus events.

dominating frat scene

Yes the greek scene is prevalent, but there are plenty of people who aren’t in the greek scene. and trust me, there’s a sorority/frat for everyone. you don’t need to be white, rich, thin or incredibly attractive to be greek. a lot of greek people i know are just average individuals who just wanted a social network. i joined a sorority and it’s the best thing that’s happened to me at Duke… sure a lot of the girls are “typical sorority girls” but I’ve also met many who are just incredible individuals

Ok I’im done. sry if there grammatical errors/mistakes/whatever… I pulled an all nighter last night and i need to go to sleep for LDOC TOMORROW!!!

Anyways, don’t turn down Duke. I love it so much and couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. <3

With the weeder classes, I can image that its going to be a nightmare trying to maintain a 3.5X.

you can take classes where there really isn't a curve... cough womens studies... cough humanities... cough rocks for jocks. those are almost guaranteed As/A-s

I have a 3.7+, double major with a minor in Poli Sci/Econ, lots of EC's, drink frequently (active Greek), and don't find it particularly difficult. Its all about taking a couple easy classes with a couple hard ones.

drink frequently = active Greek ?

drink frequently != active greek. drink frequently = QUITE POSSIBLY active greek. difference.

I was adding the disclaimer that I drink most weekends, and that I'm an active Greek as well, as the two are usually associated with one another.

bluedevilgirlie - what are you majoring in?

Thoughtprocess, I'm an old biddy, and went to an HBCU "back in the day " where I was an "active greek in what Duke refers to as something like "international panhel ". I don't recall the stereotype of "drink frequently = active greek". Any differences you've observed among the stereotypes of different "greeks"? Frankly, one reason we are supporting my D's going to Duke is it seems like a little HBCU within a really great academic environment.

^Sir, all the fraternities and sororities at Duke have different characteristics and even in those specific organizations, many of the members make radically different lifestyles decisions. An active Greek here can range from someone who chooses to abstain from drinking to an individaul who binge drinks 4-5 nights a week. It all depends on the individual. Certainly, no one is going to force their beliefs/personal choices on someone else. The Greek community here is very diverse.

^ I'm a "maam".

So you should choose Duke because all of the evil rumors about it aren't true? Bad logic, perhaps...
