DS is in high school and he is doing honors level work in all subjects except English. His learning seems to be asymmetric, doing really well in all subjects except English. What can he do to improve his reading comprehension, literary analysis, and writing? Have you used a tutor in such situations? Did it help? Are there some good Summer English Programs that can help him? How do top colleges look at an honors student with a B in English? Thanks in advance for your help.

Is the reason he’s not doing well simply because he doesn’t enjoy the class, whether it be English class in general or specifically this English class (e.g., does not like the way the class is taught, peers, teacher, etc.)?

According to DS, he doesn’t dislike the class. He may not be very enthusiastic.

Any suggestions?

I think you should probably talk to his teacher to ask him/her if they notice a specific problem, and ask them what they suggest, maybe they can tutor him. otherwise, I think a private tutor would probably be a good idea too. I don’t think top colleges would have a huge problem with one B, especially in Honors English.

Math isn’t my best subject; with proper tutoring, I do just as well as the next guy though.
