Reading Financial Aid Letter

I have a question for you all who got likely letters. I just received my Financial Aid Letter and I am confused as to how to read it... I am just not sure as to whether they are paying a lot for me or nothing at all. It does say my Parent Contribution would be $4288 at the bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

My son, Class 2010, got his financial aid package with parent contribution around 5,800. It ended up that the grant scholarship from Dartmouth College was around 36,000. Usually, the compositions of your financial aid package would be similar to the following:

Parent Contribution: $4288

Student Contribution: including summer savings around $2300, campus job around $2,000, and a portion of student's assets.

Loan: please refer to the document for projected loan:

Grant Scholarship from Dartmouth College: balance of the total costs of attending

Your package look similar to my son's. We were quite happy with that package last year. Hope you like it too.

congratulations!

Your financial aid letter will have the following components:

Cost of attendance: (tuition, room, board, books, misc.) ~$45,963 (your individual mileage may vary)

Parent contribution ($4288)
Student contribution (what you should earn over the summer)- ~2400

From page 11 of Dartmouth's guide to FA...

(the minimum student contribution for Dartmouth scholarship eligibility will range from $2,400 to $2,850 depending on a student’s class;)

Family contribution $6688

http://www.dartmouth.edu/apply/pdfs/0607_Financial_Aid_Handbook.pdf

then a break down of Dartmouth undergraduate award (what you will get in aid from the school).

Dartmouth meets 100% of demonstrated need so the balance ($39,275) would be in the form of :

Scholarships (either endowed, general scholarship, etc). $33,426

Work study (either federal work study or employment) ~2349

From page 30 from the Guide to financial aid..

(Most financial aid students will receive an award with $783 of work-study employment eligibility in each enrolled term. This amount represents earnings from approximately 11 hours per week at the College’s minimum wage of
$7.00/hour.

Loans (if applicable) ~ 3500 ( worse case if you have the maximum stafford loan. again, your individual mileage may vary) cross posted with Kvn.

Provided you do not have any major fluxuation in income/assets, it has been our experience (now going into financial aid for senior year) your package will remain pretty stable year over year.

hope this helps.

Thanks for your help! Dartmouth is indeed very generous.
