Hello,
I just received a tentative financial aid packet from Dartmouth, as follows:
FINANCIAL AID ELIGIBILITY
Dartmouth General Scholarship: $50,913
Federal Pell Grant: $5645
Federal SEOG: $3000
Federal work-study elig.: $2450

Could someone give me a breakdown of how much I am expected to pay? Will I be expected to pay the Student Contribution out-of-pocket? How does the work study work? Thanks

Riverruner, thanks for the info! So, I gathered that money earned through work study applies not to tuition but to transportation and book fees, etc. I have another question: what does the student contribution ($2605 in my case) cover? Is the student contribution basically what I’m supposed to earn from work study, or is it an additional cost?

Hopingforbetter, I will try to dispel your fears that I am a “■■■■■.” I know there are many trolls out there, and I realize now that there are discrepancies between my two posts, so it’s only normal that you might think I’m messing around. Anyway, the discrepancies in scores were mistakes on my part–I’ve retaken my SATs (which accounts for one of the score changes) and I unknowingly (until now) mis-reported my other scores. If it’s of any interest to you, my most recent scores are the most updated ones
In any case, I wouldn’t try to ■■■■■ about financial aid–it’s not like I’m going to receive more if I lie about it on CC. I assure you that I have received a TENTATIVE financial aid offer, which came with a likely letter. You are right that final financial aid decisions are not out. However, I want to gauge my offer so far.

You should confirm with D’s Finaid office, but awards that include a student contribution generally put that in a range that you could logically earn in a summer or with a very part time job. The idea is that you won’t be taking out loans, but that this amount is your “skin in the game”. Federal work study earned on campus is a separate amount. That said, schools like D often have jobs outside of the work study program that pay reasonably well and will allow you to make your contribution to your tuition bill by working on campus. Working 5 hours a week at $10 per hour through the school year would pay the bill. Congratulations on admission and receipt of this generous aid package.
