Reagan Speechwriter Peggy Noonan Caught On Live Mike: "It's Over" (because of Palin)

Three lessons to learn:

1) Pundits will support the party line and the story line on camera when they actually think something far different off camera.

2) The media have a huge interest, because of ratings and the money they make on ads, in suggesting that this campaign is still a race even when behind the scenes they think it's over. Here's a peek behind that curtain.

3) Always make sure a microphone is turned off.

YouTube - Noonan and Murphy on Palin

Here's the transcript, as best it can be recreated, from CNN:
Murphy: Um, you know, because, I come out of the blue swing state governor world. Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, I mean, and these guys, this is all like how you win a Texas Race race, just run it up, and it's not gonna work.

Noonan: It's Over.

Murphy: Still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech and do himself some good.

Todd: Its insulting to Kay Baily Hutchinson ??

Noonan: Saw kay this morning

Todd: She's(?) never looked comfortable up there..

Murphy: all bummed out.

Todd: I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they can obtain?

Noonan: The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political ******** about narratives...

Todd: Yeah, but what's the narrative

Murphy: I totally agree.

Noonan: Every time Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.

Murphy: You know what's the worst thing about it, the greatest of McCain is no cynicism, and..

???: This is cynical.

??: And as you called it, gimmicky.
Wow lol. I mean everyone knew this was a long shot but we better not get complacent. Democrats almost without fail find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I hope Obama is different and doesn’t take his eyes of the ball or get cocky. The game is in his court, but it’s not over.

Yep, the media are corporations. They have an investment in this election. The media aren’t some even-handed “public services” sponsored by the government, unlike what some people would like to think.

Avoid that garbage like the plague.

Hm do you want to know what Noonan did earlier today?

[Peggy Noonan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Peggy Noonan - Wikipedia)

Typical Conservative doublespeak. They’re scrambling to support Palin disingenuously!

^^^

I wonder how she’s going to face certain of her colleagues after this one…this is not a storyline she wanted to promote, that’s for sure.

That is insanely hilarious, lol.

^^^^

Pugfug90: Do you really believe the explanation that it was all taken out of context? Did you listen to the audio?

I think she’s bummed out herself because her pundit stock is going to take a hit and she knows it…

[The Corner on National Review Online](http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=M2IyOTRlNGIxNTY4OTZkZjllZWYzYzkwNDRhOTYwYTc=)
Another further explanation.

Of course, it’s clear that Noonan would rather have someone else that would be subject to less scrutiny. She didn’t like the choice as an appeal to the base that would drive a conservative narrative because she believes that it’s over for the base of the Republican party to represent the views of America as the nation has moved towards the center.

While Noonan seems to be giving up on representing the right, I don’t think there has ever been a time where we need McCain and Palin more. Back to family, back to favoring people over trees, back to the party of small government.

What Noonan said was treachering on Lieberman level…though in the end I think she will only become a more prominent national figure because of this, even if she is viewed in a more spiteful manner.

Says the guy who supports the party that has created over 4000 war widows and widowers (pro-family?), ruined the economy (pro-people?), and bloated the deficit with irresponsible government spending (pro-small government?).

Conservatives are now conceding the disaster that is the Bush administration. And they’re asking for you to give them a chance to fix it… by electing the guy who voted with the president 90% of the time (in addition to keeping most of the Bush people like Rove in the backstage).

Palin is not qualified and swing voters are being driven to Obama. Did McCain not know or not care?

^^and they’re asking for another chance to fix it, and they have NO PLANS to FIX IT! Everything’s dandy to them, except the few civil liberties that Americans have left need to be gotten rid of.

Not this time!

Great comments, OP
