I really messed up my GPA in 10th grade, but I have worked really hard Junior year therefore I have a huge upward trend. Also I have challenged myself throughout high school, mostly taking Honors and AP courses.

Application

I know my teacher recommendations are going to be very good. One of them is from my AP Programming teacher and I know it is going to be amazing because she knows me very well. The other is from my AP Lang teacher.

My counselor recommendation is also going to be pretty good because she has helped me out a lot and she knows how eager I am to get into a good college.

In my essays I will explain my situation and talk about how much I have changed and how rare it for students to have this type of turn around in there grades. I have done some research and it is VERY rare for a student have a drastic shift in GPA. I will check it with multiple people. I am going to work all summer on them, and make sure the one for Cornell is special, because my chances look very slim. I will also admit that there is no excuse for my 10th grade GPA and that instead of giving up, I persevered.

Personal/Other

I am white, from a middle class family.

I go to regular public school in Maryland.

Planning to major in Computer Science.

I have have shown interest in these colleges by going to college visits, college fairs, and talking with there admissions officers.

These are the Universities I want to know my chances for. Yes I realize my chances for Cornell are low, but I hope my essay, drastic shift in GPA, SAT score, and EC's will give me a shot. I just want to know others opinion on my chances. I do not know what more I could have done my Junior year to show that I am just as smart and capable as every other top-tier student. Also for your convenience you can just copy the list and put my chances next to each one.

Universities

Cornell University:
University of Maryland College Park (In-State):
New York University:
University of Michigan--Ann Arbor:
Georgia Tech:
University of Illinois--Urbana-Champaign:
University of California--San Diego

Cornell University: reach
University of Maryland College Park (In-State): low match
New York University: match
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor: high match
Georgia Tech: high match
University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign: match/low match
University of California–San Diego match

Your ECs, test scores, recs, everything except your GPA looks great! I think the only thing that could hurt you is your GPA, but everything else sounds amazing. It is good that you are picking up your GPA. If you keep that up, you could knock a couple of those colleges into matches.

@runorrun Thanks for info. Any other opinions?

Any other opinions?

Anyone???

bumpppppp

Cornell University: reach
University of Maryland College Park (In-State): match/high safety
New York University: high match
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor: low reach
Georgia Tech: match
University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign: low match
University of California–San Diego: high match

Everything looks really good besides your GPA sophomore year but your upward trend really makes up for it. If you just explain whatever happened that year that would help a ton but I do honestly think you could get into at least some of these schools!

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1644741-chances-at-usc-or-uc-santa-barbara.html#latest

Cornell: Reach. But I would like to put it out there that Ivies do value life experience & people who have had very diverse experiences, so make that pop in your essays. Make them understand.
UMD: safety
NYU: low reach/ match (for general admissions… if you were going for Stern business or another specialized program they are known for, I would say chances would drastically change)
Georgia Tech: safety
University of IL: match
UCSD: reach/ high match (public schools don’t put much stock into life experience, they really only care about GPA and SATs… so I don’t know how well you’d fare. I knew somebody who got into Harvard but not UCLA… So don’t let this discourage you. Publics are just very different than privates, ESPECIALLY when you’re not in-state)

@ssswism Yeah I’m going to make the one for Cornell special because I have nothing to lose. Thanks for the chance.

Anybody else?
