Does anyone remember the exact wording of the reality entertainment essay?
I think that I might have misread it.. :(
Also, to what extent do you have to go off topic to get a 0?

I would like to know this too… I have the cancellation forms just in case.

Reality entertainment… seemed like everyone focused on stuff like Jersey Shore or whatnot… I think graders would be flexible enough to let you do “entertainment” in general however, as long as you argued it well/related it to the topic (in the thesis/topics).

I think it was “Do you think reality TV is beneficial to society or is it harmful?”
Even if those arent the exact words thats what is was asking

it didn’t pertain specifically to television though

it said ‘reality shows’.

The quote listed pertained directly to reality television - while I think all forms of entertainment will be accepted, if backed up, I think television was the safest approach. Remember, its formulaic grading - the reader is going to be looking to see if you A) have a clear defined thesis B) Support the thesis with a couple of examples and C) write a lot (sad but true). No matter your take on the essay, if your thesis is clearly defined and it is at least in the realm of the topic, all you need is the examples to be good to go

it said reality forms of entertainment…which could mean tv shows, books, movies (blah, blah, blah) but tv shows seemed to be popular cuz i think they mentioned that in the box but you didn’t have to write about tv shows

I’m pretty sure the question asked if reality television programs were beneficial or harmful to society in the first sentence, but the next sentence asked how these forms of entertainment are affecting people.

Instead of how saying reality tv affects people that watch it, I wrote about how reality tv affects the people participating in it.

Am I getting major points off for that?

@azurestar…probably because you didn’t answer the prompt and it was all forms of reality entertainment…in the box it uses tv as an example :(

sorry buddy

So, that does count as off topic? Even if it’s pretty close to answering the question?

i honestly dont think it won’t matter b/c that question was out of the norm… your fine especially if you backed it up well :P

I interpreted the question as “Is reality TV harmful?”.

I said it was NOT harmful and cited that (1) a contestant on American Idol garnered much fame with a fan base, (2) a contestant on The Biggest Loser was under + positive from fans of the show from its “reality” aspect ended losing lots of weight and living a healthy lifestyle, (3) a celebrity out of the spot got back into fame from Dancing w/ the Stars.

Is that completely off base??!

^ I dont think its off base, but the last example you used - no one is going to feel bad for a celebrity because they got so called “out of fame”

TBH I’m betting as long as it was somewhat related and filled 2 whole pages, you should be good for a 10+

Alright well I completely filled both pages, and these were my basic points:

American Idol - psychologically damaging because of Simon’s harsh critiques (maybe a little over the top). But if someone truly believes they are good, and are told they are horrible, that could very well be severely traumatizing, I believe.

The Amazing Race - physically harmful because a racer’s dad suffered a minor stroke a couple episodes ago.

Fear Factor - hazardous to the digestive system because people are obligated to eat grotesque and not necessarily things that are optimal for the digestive system to process.

Would that be considered on topic?
