Really bad class rank and poor(ish) GPA

Hey guys. I'm currently an (Asian, male) junior at a good high school ( <150 US News) with a class size of roughly 80. I was pretty unmotivated/slacked off alot/hung out with the wrong group freshman/sophomore year and made straight B's (with an A in AP Comparative government and the required 2 gym and 1 arts courses lol). I recently got my grades back for fresh/soph year and I have roughly a 3.2UW/4.1W GPA (High school only offers Honors and AP with the exception of gym and art) of I started working really hard this year and should get about 5 A's (APUSH, AP Macro/Micro, Chemistry, Spanish) and 2 B's with the hardest teachers at the school (Math and English (only 2 people got A's last year with that English teacher)), so I'm expecting a 3.3-3.4 UW/4.2-4.3W GPA and a class rank in the middle 50% (don't know if top or bottom) by the time I apply to college. I took the ACT today and am expecting a 33 or 34. By the end of Senior year I expect to graduate with 9/10 AP classes. So I'm just gonna cut to the chase here...how screwed am I (considering applying to Top 40 colleges and trying to get scholarships at colleges like Indiana)? Thanks!

you have a good shot at schools 35 - 40.

Does your school even report class rank? I go to a school of a very similar size and quality, and they don’t even report it. I had a 3.3UW/3.9W GPA with a 33 ACT, 34 super scored and got into multiple Top 50 US NEWS schools. You should be fine, remember that your small pond isn’t reflective of all the other ponds.

I think anything in the 40’s will be a low reach at least, but you have a very realistic shot, especially at 20-40. All depends how you rank em though, not US news. Of the possible Top 50 US NEWS schools I got into, I am picking the lowest ranked one.

Point is your stats can work well for many schools depending on the rest of your app. You are in no means screwed.

I think that you can shoot for national universities and LACs ranked 35-50 as reaches, 50-85 as matches. Your GPA will hurt you and many universities factor GPA over SAT (ie., UCs, Penn State…) What state do you live in? So the higher your score, the better in your case, but you’ll need very high scores to offset that.
I wouldn’t apply to more than 2-3 ranked below 35.
