So i'm currently a junior in HS. I've question that's been bothering me for as long as i can remember. Anytime i am asked to put down my race, i have always chose "other" on any test forms or surveys or applications. However, i would like to know what i should really put down. My family is Indian. My grandparents and my parents were both born in South Africa. I was born there was well. Before I turned even one, my parents moved here to America. I've basically lived here my whole life. Does that make me African-American? Or am i Asian? Or something else? I feel like African-American just isn't right because i'm not black. Yet, Asian wouldn't be quite appropriate either because i'm not an Asian.</p>
<p>Race is a biological concept; AA and Asian are races. Racially you are Asian. </p>
<p>South African is a nationality, nationality is different from race, people of all races are South African.</p>
<p>For instance, I am third generation Asian American. Culturally I am not very Asian, but racially I am 100% Asian.</p>

<p>It’s a social construct. The biological differences don’t mean anything unless we make them mean something, and the average difference between races is smaller than the average difference within a race.</p>
<p>You’re whatever race you identify yourself with most. “Multiracial” might be closest to how you identify yourself.</p>
<p>You should just leave it blank. Who cares.</p>
<p>If you want an advantage, check off African American
(or write that in, if your only choice is Black).
You’re not lying - race/ethnicity is a self-constructed concept. You are what race/ethnicity you identify as.</p>
<p>You’re not AA or multiracial. You’re Asian. Either leave it blank or check Asian American.</p>
