really desperate to get the whole GPA debacle cleared up...

hey everyone. so here's the thing. i posted this on another part of cc, but i'm re-posting so as to hopefully get more replys :)

okay soooo. i know colleges get sent our full school transcript, including gym and crap electives. which i also hear are taken out when re-calculated. but in my school we have an A/B/C system that is weighted. not to mention classes are very hard and everyone is in general really competitive...
but on college board it says that when colleges re-calculate your gpa they do NOT use a weighted system. in which case, i would be completely scre*ed
is this true??

If your school is truly very competitive--SAT average over 2000--colleges will know that a GPA at your school is a different animal than at other schools.

Actually, its a myth to assume that most colleges recalculate gpa's....they don't have the time nor the resources. For the most part, they look at whatever your HS sends them and the School Profile for context.

wait so...they don'tttttt recalculate? so that means they count electives and gym and stuff...?

depends on the school. From what I've heard, publics tend to recalcualte, and privates tend to use what's given to them.

I mean unless the school is really number based there's no need to recalculate. Readers can see right away what's boosting your grade - an AP class or the boat building class you took sophomore year.

This just made my whole life a little bit better except for the fact that my school barely weights (only .25 for AP) but whatever, it's a pretty good boost.

Don't most colleges only compare unweighted averages?

If not, that seems really unfair. Students who go to schools without weighting would be at a severe disadvantage to those who go to schools with weighting.
