I took precalc in my senior year of HS and didn't do too well, more because of the teacher and her method of teaching than my ability to understand. I'm planning on majoring in CE or CS by the and have some questions:

1) Should I go with math 19 or math 3(precalc) again?

2) How long does each course "last?" I think math 3 is only for one quarter, so would I be really "behind" taking it before two quarters of math 19?

3) How's the math placement test and do I really "need to study?" My friend who took it says I don't exactly need to worry too much over it. I did score 760 on the SAT math II test, so hopefully it shouldn't be a problem.

dude the math placement test is a joke its really easy dont worry about it. as for math 19, im not sure as im taking the class this year but it really depends on your major.

The placement test will decide it for you, pretty much. Take 19A or 3 with Bauerle if you can, he’s a great teacher. You don’t really need precalc to succeed in Math 19A/B.

The math placement exam is not that hard in my opinion. It is mostly high school math. For the math class, I think if you take math 3, then you will not have the chance to get into Math23A this year. But I don’t know if that is a big problem or not.

Math 19B is a hard class and pretty intense with the trigonometric identities and stuff. Especially with Bauerle… you will need to know all of them on the tests. I didn’t take Math 3 because I placed into 19B out of high school, but not knowing the precalc stuff very well from high school was a bit of a detriment. Perhaps 19A will prepare you a bit, but if I were in your shoes I’d consider taking Math 3.

If you get Tromba, be ready for rants and amazing/racist declarations.
Also, I hope you have a good TA. If you’re unhappy with your section, ask around and try to figure out if a better one fits into your schedule. Try to switch!

I’m confused about which books we are supposed to buy. what is the difference between the 5 different books that we are supposed to pick one from?

The 5 options are mixes between the book, the book with webassign, volume one of the book…and so on.

The book comes in two formats. One volume or two volume. Same material, but the two volume version divides the material, book 1 for 19A and book 2 for 19B. Pick whichever you like.
