Hi my name is Ty, Im a Sophmore in High School and I'm from the Central Coast of California.
Let me just be honest with you guy's, freshman year, I screwed up... I mean big time. I had alot of anger within myself that reflected on my Academics, try GPA 1.9! This came to a big shock to my family since I had always had my GPA above 3.0, This year I finally decided what i wanted to do with my life, and that was to at least be successful. As the year crept on, I kept realizing "THAT I MUST GO TO COLLEGE!" It's basically all I can think about. Well I got much better grades this year around. And I am as most people are quite intellegent and do good in school if I apply myself.

So, I went to the school counciler today to tell her that I had my eyes on UC Santa Cruz, she grim faced told me "Tyler you are not going to college" And after all this hard work in improving my life and grades, This was probaly the biggest let down in my whole life. Now I've heard stories of people doing bad in school the first couple of years, and then improving dramatically and then going to good schools. This must be fiction? Am I wrong?

If any of you guy's have any info or support that could help me please do! Anything would be appreciated! If you have read this far thank you for taking the time.
~TY~

okay, first of all, tell yourself why you're going to college.

there are over 40,000 colleges in this nation. you're going to go to 1.

don't tell your conselour this, but she's a moron. she's a prejudice half-wit. just because you "mess up" freshman year does NOT mean you're not going to college.

let's not talk numbers. let's talk about work ethic and becoming a responsible adult. when you develop honest and good haibts, you can be successful anywhere you want. apply to UCSC, and know that you worked hard your soph, junior, and senior year. even if you do get rejected, you still have community college (yes, it is college). you can then transfer to UCSC or some other great UC or college.

life doesn't only have once chance.

but just wanting to work hard doens't cut it. execute and do it. have a goal. prove your conselour wrong. show her in a few yeras that you got into that college. you don't need her approval, but owuldn't it be a nice slap in the face to show her you got into college.

i still can't believe your conselour said that to you, though. aren't they hired to help kids, not destroy their dreams before their high school careers even reach the half-way mark?

anyway, work hard, stay true, do things for yourself.

So you got around a 2.0 for the first year and - what?- close to a 3.0 this year? So that's a two-year average in the mid-2's? So you go 3.5 for your junior and senior years because now, you're doing it because YOU want to do it, not because you feel someone's "making" you do it. That's a 3.0 average, and if you live in Georgia, you get free tuition at any state school. Do not use that counselor again - find another mentor. OBTW, the U. of Michigan told us they look at sophomore and junior grades only, so I'd guess there are many other schools that aren't very swayed by how you did in 9th grade.

UCs and SCUs only consider soph and junior year grades. Get as close as you can to a 4.0 next year and you'll have a shot at lower UCs including UCSC and all the CSUs. Work hard to get good SAT scores.
