Really Scared

Ahhh I really REALLY want to go here, I know all of you probably do or did. I'm so confused about what my chances are. Ohhh

Its a scary time. The thing to remember, though, is that there are many excellent colleges and if you do a good statistical cast you will end up fine. Do a couple of applications to other schools on your list first. That will get you into application mode. Interview at other schools first. You will feel more confident and relaxed if it is not your first time.

you're not alone bendrumfront. First choice right here and I dont even know if I need to retake my SAT or not (or how to start my long essay, I know what I want to say, but I want a killer intro to it)

schimivy -
sometimes if you write everything except the intro first - the intro is easier to write.

Female-person:

The calc placement test I just took was scary.

what? for university of chicago?

:: pat pat ::

I'm really scared too, since Chicago is also my first choice over everything in the world. But you know, the thing to remember is that besides writing your essays, filling out those forms, and requesting recommendations, everything else is out of your control. Make your application the best it can be, and leave the rest up to chance.

Personally, I reserve about a day or two every month for severe panicking (not consciously, it just happens that way). But after I'm done, I feel a lot better. Sooo... you're not alone :)

neverborn! (Now I can put a face to you!)

Oh yes, the calc exam.... Yuck. My review did not help me in the least.

Have you dried off from the downpour yet? :-)

does one have to take a calc placement exam if they've taken calc AB and BC (and have the accompanying AP scores) by the time they get there?

^ you probably had to do some sort of placement test for math at any school

have*

(ten char)

oh katharos i miss u! the test did not go well? :(

nada...are you applying to UChi? just out of curiousity

I'm terrified I won't get in, especially since my GPA is way lower than a lot of people's on here. ;_; UChicago is my first choice too.

The calc placement test has to be advanced enough for kids that have taken a year or two beyond Calc BD to show their stuff. Its SUPPOSED to be hard!

The calc test covered most everything, from algebra through calculus proofs, so I am sure I wasn't the only one who felt overwhelmed. Well, after talking with neverborn, I know there were at least two of us. ;-)

But it's a tough test. And there is the option of just taking a math (non calc) test for those who have not had calc/don't want to place into a terribly difficult course. About 1/5 of the students in the room in which I took the test opted not to take the calc one.

By the way:

Nada, I sent you a PM.

Yes, the calc test has to include problems which separate the people who took AP or a calculus sequence at their local college from those who have studied more advanced mathematics, like analysis and abstract algebra.

Don't sweat it.

I will be lucky if I get placed into 130s based on that thing. /shudder

Katharos: See! You're all social and awesome online, why are you so shy offline? :o

Neverborn, the internet shields my quietness. I start blabbing when I get to know people very well, though; they can't get me to shut up. Maybe you'll see. :-)
