Really Sick

I've been sick for over a month now, and it's just getting worse. Health services diagnosed it as a sinus infection, and I took all the antibiotics they prescribed in addition to flonase, but none of it helped. My school is on the East Coast, and home is in California, so it's not easy to just go back home for a weekend. I've been falling behind on a lot of work (especially since I have studio courses with large projects) and my grades have slipped dramatically ever since I've gotten sick. My advisor said I should look into a medical leave of absence. Since I'm a freshman and this is my first semester, I was wondering if that's the best course of action.

Also, the school's location and the school itself don't feel like they suit me, so I was thinking of just reapplying to another school. I don't have any credits to transfer, so I'd have to start over in the fall. Is it worth it?

I had to take a medical leave this semester because I’ve been sick for the past two months or so… and I definitely do not regret it. If I were you I would seriously consider it. But if not, make sure to talk to all of your professors about the situation, I’m sure they will be very understanding. Hope you feel better soon!

The thing is, my parents are against it because we already paid tuition for the semester.

Next time get tuition insurance for exactly that reason. We got it this year because I almost had to drop out during finals week last year to have emergency surgery.

I think you need to go see a regular doctor, something isn’t right here. A sinus infection shouldn’t behave this way. Do you have a mold problem at your school or something? Maybe a humidifier would help? If your parents wont let you take leave, which isn’t wise but there’s nothing you can do about it, you’ll have to figure out what the problem is and take care of it at school. Our health services on campus, in my opinion, don’t have a clue what they are doing.

I would suggest for you to post on the Parent Forum. They are usually a lot more knowledgeable and are quite helpful.

Two months is a long time to be sick. Have you seen a regular doctor? Sometimes at the school’s health services they don’t like to give you very high dosage of antibiotics. You may have so sort of allergy, or your room could have mold.

This is so weird, I am having that exact same problem…have had a “sinus infection” for almost 4 months. Medical leave was suggested but I don’t want to waste $22,000 dollars, so I’m gonna stick it out even though I missed 3 weeks of school, and some classes won’t let me make up the work so I’m forced to withdraw…so I’ll have a W. But I would talk to your academic dean and see what they say. Hopefully they’ll be helpful.

If my family had known about tuition insurance they probably would have gotten it, and I would take a leave. I wonder why they don’t offer it to parents…or make it something that is automatically enrolled. They automatically enroll you in a $600 health insurance policy when most college students are already covered under their parent’s policy.

See another doctor, go to the hospital, idk.
