What to do when sick?

So I've been sick since Wednesday and my sickness so far shows no signs of abating - I woke up this morning with a ferociously bloody nose and hacking coughs. My lungs seem capable of generating near infinite amounts of mucus and my throat has all but given up on me.

Student Health Services is closed on Sundays and Saturdays, so I didn't have the chance to go on those two days. Mondays are my heaviest in terms of classes, and I have two relatively large homework assignments due tomorrow, so I can't really spend all day resting. Anyone on CC have any advice?

If you have over the counter medications that you have taken in the past, I’m assuming you’re using them. There’s probably a store on/near campus where you could pick up some sort of cold remedy if you don’t have any on hand.

Other than that, stay hydrated. Hot tea with honey will soothe your throat, some chicken soup will give you some protein, orange juice has vitamin C (if it doesn’t irritate your throat). Get what rest you can, and be sure to wipe down all the surfaces in your room (keyboard, phone etc) so that you don’t recycle those germs. Hope you feel better soon!

When I had the flu last year, I let myself skip one meeting of each class a week. If you can, just show up to turn your assignments in, then head over to the Student Health Center.

Hope you feel better soon. Maybe try emailing your Prof. to see if the homework deadline could be extended. If not, I guess you just gotta plow through it and hope for the best. I second the hydration mentioned above.

Are there any clinics in your town at CVS or Walgreens? I would think this would be the next best thing to student health services.

Try e-mailing your professors. Some can be surprisingly understanding. I think a lot of people don’t realize that about professors- they’re human too. They have kids who have been really sick and needed to miss school, and they’ve probably been sick plenty of times too. Usually most people would rather you stay in bed and rest than go to class, be miserable, get worse, and get everyone else sick too.

Hope you feel better soon!

a bloody nose? that doesn’t sound like your usual cold symptom to me.

I would go to an emergency room or a clinic. This doesn’t sound good to me - with bloody nose and all. Email your professors, I am pretty certain they would want you to stay in good. Email kids in your class to see if they would let you borrow their class notes (and you return the favor on a later date).

Try to find an urgent care center before going to the ER. You’ll get seen much faster and it will be much cheaper.

Woah, bloody nose? Sounds intense. Do you have a steamer? I hear those works wonders if you’re sick. Also, try Nyquil and Dayquil EVERYDAY. I just got sick, as well (minus the bloody nose), and I’ve been religiously taking these and I feel better after about a week. Hope you’re O.K…

Stay hydrated and get lots of vitamins. If you have a roommate or someone who lives close by on your hall, ask them to give you a hand with some stuff (like dropping off assignments so you can rest, or going to the campus convenience store for medicine). Schedule yourself so that you can alternate between work and rest; you’ll focus better that way because you won’t be overexerting yourself. I have a really heavy workload too, but I had to miss a day of class last week. I got notes from other people and it’s been fine so far. Resting will help you get better. But you should go to Student Health Services first thing tomorrow.

blogrit - how are you doing? Hope you are feeling better.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I went to SHS today and got proscribed some meds. I was also given some nasal sprays. When it comes to the nosebleeds, apparently I have polyp in my nose or something like that. I emailed my profs, arranged appointments with them to go over what I missed, and got an extension on my homeworks.

Everything turned out better than expected, so now I just need to rest and recover.
