Reapplying for Sophomore Year

I think my thread title describes it all. I'm currently WL'ed, but I doubt I'm going to get off of it. I know there is a possibility, but I'm not holding my breath. Anyways, I am going to apply this year to be an incoming sophomore, and I have several questions.

List of schools:
Cate
Thacher
Episcopal
St. Georges
Peddie

1) I have a list of some of the schools I'm interested in. I don't know much about the other schools, and my main concern is that they don't admit any or very few incoming sophomores. Can you let me know if they admit incoming sophomores and how many?

2) Can you describe the A) English/Humanities program, B)The Languages offered, C)Music opportunities (Instrumental music please)?

Thanks!

from what i’ve heard, thacher admits 7-10 new sophomores (yikes). the number does seem awfully low, though… check with the school to be 100% sure.

@circlemidnight; same situation as you. xD i will also be applying to thacher & peddie. i personally can’t answer those questions accurately, but for thacher you can PM ‘Thacher Parent’ & for peddie you can PM ‘laugh a little’.

@circlemidnight,

1) Most boarding schools have great English/Humanities classes. I’ve heard that St. George’s has really good English/Humanities.
2) I’m not sure about this one… Sorry!
3) I know that St. George’s has a really good music program. That’s why I’m applying there next year. You can listen to their kids play on their website. And Thatcher used to have a very good music program. I know someone who used teach there. Idk how it is now, but I imagine its very good. They probably have everything you’re looking for as far as instrumental music goes.

Good luck, and I hope you get in next year. I’m in the same situation you are, so I understand how you feel.

@ aaralyn and ifax-Thanks for your help, especially that info about music in St. Georges. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one in this situation…

about st. georges-- i was PMed by Lax23 after inquiring about that school. i don’t know how much truth his statements hold, but from what he told me… it doesn’t sound good. PM lax23 if you’re wondering, but basically i was told that they have a very high attrition rate and there’s a high level of unhappiness in the student body (keep in mind, this is totally unsubstantiated and you should take this with a grain of salt!)

anyway… try PMing lax23. even if he’s truly an unhappy student at st. georges, keep in mind that he’s just one out of many students… he doesn’t speak for the student body’s entirety.

Good to see that you included EHS, Cate and SG! These are all great schools!

I don’t think the actual # of admitted sophomores matters that much, since the acceptance rates are fairly similar. But I do think bigger schools are a little bit easier. They can afford to take more unhooked 10th graders (without worrying about the current freshman class).

Schools I heard that are strong in humanities:
Concord Academy (350 students) (very artsy feeling)
Deerfield Academy (350)
The Lawrenceville School (800)
Middlesex School (350) (writing workshop)
Milton Academy (700) (have a fantastic jazz program)
The Hotchkiss School (800) (a global vision)
Phillips Academy (1200)
St. Andrew’s School (300)
St. Paul’s School (350)

I’m too lazy to check other schools. Do your homework!

(So you see, Chinese, French, Spanish and Latin are offered virtually everywhere. If you are serious about doing Russian, Italian, or Hebrew – check the course catalogs!)

<---- LOOK, WE MADE IT TO THE “HOME PAGE”!

I know Deerfield and Andover both admit quite a lot of sophomores, might be worth looking at them

@Prep2011-Thanks for sending me a link to a thread I made  Also, thanks for those great links as well as the info for great English/humanities program.

@DiveAlive-Will do as soon as possible! Thanks for your help

@Alixdingo-I was WL’ed at DA this year, and I do like it quite a bit, so I am sure I will re-apply next year. But I was rejected at Andover. Should I apply to a school that has already rejected me?

Just a question to all of you-I have piles and piles of catalogues from the schools at home. If I choose to re-apply, do I have to inquire again? If so, what should I do with the catalogues? What did you guys do?

Hey Circle,

I’ve been lurking on this page for a while now and I guess I’ll post.

Last year, I applied to only Andover as a day student and got rejected. I think it was because of my horrible SSAT score… 55% overall yuck. I also didn’t really know why I was applying to a boarding school… I didn’t have a valid reason to leave my current school district.

I was pretty sure that I was going to stay at my local high school for the next four years, but during freshman orientation at my local school, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me.

I ended up reapplying to Andover again for Sophomore year, as well as Choate, Hotchkiss, and Exeter. I also looked at Taft as a prospective school as well. I originally had Andover, Exeter, Hotchkiss, Taft, Lawrenceville, DA, Loomis, Middlesex, and Groton as options, but when I went for interviews and did more research, the schools I didn’t end up applying to just weren’t the right fit for me. Hotchkiss also was not a great fit for me, but I ended up applying since I already had paid the application fee.

I only got accepted to Choate, wait listed at Andover and Hotchkiss, and denied at Exeter. When I went for my revisits, it clearly sealed the deal and I ended up liking Choate more than liking Andover.

If you have any questions, PM me!
I am also very into music

@brandon-That’s a really great story! I will definitely take up your offer, and PM you. Choate is a wonderful school and I’m sure I’ll re-apply there next year!

I applied to all those schools (except Thatcher) in addition to Choate, St. Andrews, Taft and Concord. I got into Cate and LOVED it!!! They have a great humanities program which I found extremely appealing because I love history, Cate is one of the BEST! But they accept very few sophomores… About the same as Thatcher. Choate wand Cate were tied for me because they were both my top choices… Concord was too small and I didn’t even set foot on St. Andrew’s campus… I really regret not considering SAS. The rest (EHS, Peddie and SGS) wait listed me. Ultimately, I decided to go to Choate because I felt the academic rigor at Choate was stronger (Cate’s was as well but Choate’s was higher)

@BronxKid-Thanks! I had no idea that they accepted so few sophomores. I have the catalogue, and although it looks to be a wonderful school, I’m not sure if I want to apply to a school where so few are accepted. Oh well.

It won’t hurt!

Haha…that’s the attitude. I suppose it won’t hurt. I do genuinely like the schools, so I might as well. Thanks all!
