I am a freshman this year and Im definitely having second thoughts about my college decision. I got into my first choice, UNC, but didn't go because its so expensive OOS.
Instead, I go to a private university about 15 mins away from home. That's a problem in itself. I go home every weekend and I feel like I am not branching out and becoming more independent...
I also feel like my school is incredibly closed minded. The professors are great, but my peers... It is sad that in the college town the students are actually stereotyped as being snobbish and pretentious. I really didn't believe it in the beginning, but I am sadly starting to now. I came from a diverse public high school and loved it. Now I feel like I am not meeting very many people with different attitudes and opinions.
Im starting to think that having to pay loans after college is way better than remembering college like this. I want a larger school with a more diverse, open-minded atmosphere.
Im scared, though, because I've never really been so far away from home...
I guess I am just wondering...are problems with the atmosphere of the school legitimate reasons to transfer? any input will be helpful.

Yes, if you are unhappy with the student body, then that is a valid reason to transfer. My S is considering doing the same thing.
Why are you going home on the weekends? Are there things going on at the school you could become involved in? It might help your present situation to get involved on campus and meet more people. Give your school a chance and then if you are still unhappy transferring is always an option.

I guess I go home because its right there. Its so hard not to, but I know I shoudn't be going that often.
I am involved in some clubs on campus though.
I don't know, Im not miserable, but in the back of my head I always think I would have been better off at UNC. I think it would be a better fit, but Im scared of making the same mistake twice.

Transfer.

Try to get in at UNC as a transfer student. The deadline for fall 2008 semester is March 1st and they don't accept spring transfers. do it now.

You're too close to home. I personally believe no one should stay their lives in one city/area or even region for that matter. You'd be surprised to see just how different people are throughout the country.

UNC would be good for you. You go to school to make money when you graduate right? so your loans will be like $20 more a month, it's not a big deal.

What state are you in? Are there other state schools you could apply to that have more of what you are looking for that may be more cost effective?

Thank you both for your input!
Texas. I've looked at schools here, but I really didn't like UT or A&M ( they didn't have my major anyway) and nothing else has really grabbed my attention. I am still looking and trying to stay open-minded, but I'm afraid if I don't go to UNC, Im going to regret it. AHHH! I'm confused.

What is your major?

If you are not happy, transfer.
