thinking of transferring. opinions?

I am a first semester freshman at the moment at a school 5 hours away from my home. I've been making some good friends here, and my classes seem to fit my criteria for the most part. In May when I chose to come to this school, it was between here and one other school that I loved, that was 1 hour away from my house. I loved everything about the other school, the feeling was just what I wanted but the school's reputation wasn't as good as this one. Now I'm beginning to think I made the wrong decision because I can't get this other school out of my head. The people here are different from what I am used to and it's somewhat harder for me to make friends with them for that reason. The people at other school I loved were definitely more like me, and I feel like I would fit in way more there. I may just be feeling homesick, but my question is do you think I have a good enough reason to transfer? Please let me know what you think. Thanks :)

I think that you might have a “good enough” reason. Or you might not. :)

It is really way too soon to tell. I can tell you that, at this point in freshman year, many many students feel like the may be in the wrong place. Some feel they have made a huge mistake. Often these same students, after Thanksgiving break or after semester break, are perfectly acclimated and happy in their first school.

I advise focusing totally on your current school, getting involved (or more involved) in activities, cultivate the friendships you have started, taking full advantage of the academics.

Don’t even think about transferring at this time. If, after the first term is over, you still feel the transferring might be the right option, you can focus on it then. That is plenty of time - most deadlines are in March.

If the school where you would like to transfer has an earlier deadline, then obviously you will have to act sooner. But otherwise, I would put it in the back of my mind.

Not saying you shouldn’t or won’t transfer (I did myself as did my son). Just that now is not the right time - for most students - to concern themselves with it.

Good luck.
