Reassuring Statistics

Hey, a lot of people are down on themselves about getting in to Princeton (at least on their online persona... maybe we're all subconciously super confident), but I think we're a little harder on ourselves then we should be.

First, the early admit rate is around 30%, which is pretty good (most people only throw around the 8.9% rate... seriously, those who applied early: we've got it a lot better off.) Also, remember that if you're deferred you still have around a 13-14% admit rate regular decision. Overall, that's a 44% chance you'll be admitted (assuming you're not rejected).

Also, keep in mind around 75% of college kids report that they're at their first-choice school. That's pretty good in the long run.

Anyway, good luck to everyone! Let's be positive and hope for the best.

Those figures seem too high but I hope I am wrong.

What we are callign for is a willfull suspension of your disbelief ladies and gents'.

haha but sorry, you cant simply add the probabilities like that. Thats like saying if ED acceptance rate is 50% and deferral acceptance rate is 50%, the overall acceptance rate is 100%, which is wrong.

You have to calculate the probability of rejection, then subtract from 1. So according to your statistics, 1-.7x.87=.391, approximately 39%. :p

I thought early admit rate was only 20%.

While the numbers seem nice, a look at last year's ED decisions thread can scare the daylights out of pretty much anyone.

Yeah, I thought it was approximately 16%.

For the love of God, stop analyzing the numbers! The main point was to stop being so damn hard on yourselves. And, captplanet is right... a lot of people on here are like, "Oh, I got a 1590... I need to retake." Soooo freaking obsessed for nothing. A 1600 is nothing! Anyone can get it (I don't care what anyone says... I stand by this) with enough prep and manipulation of the system. Natural intellegence will shine not with sheer numbers, but with the prose you, your teachers, and your counselors write.

Most of the responses illustrate why the thread was posted in the first place.

Thanks for the math update though. Yeah, that didn't really make sense at the time.

But still, 39% is a lot more than most people give it.
