reccos and writos

I've got three questions.

1) Can I ask my favorite teacher for a reccomendation? He taught me english in 10th grade, and creative writing in 11th. Or should I ask my 11th grade english teacher? I'd much rather have him do it.

2)Do you guys ask more than two teachers to write reccos? Not like, three teachers for one school. But just split up your recs among teachers?

3 (two parts) ) When the School Report asks me to write my classes, do I have to write AP English Literature, or just AP English, on my class sched. it says AP English? Same for AP Physics? When I fill out my current classes online for USC, I don't have enough room for all my classes. Do I not write the unimportant ones, or what?

??????????????????

1) Your 10th grade teacher is fine, because he taught you in 11th. Most colleges want teachers that taught you in 11th or 12th so you've got that covered.

2) I have no idea what you're talking about.

3) What are you doing filling out the school report? Counselors do that.

What I think you're asking is if you're applying to 5 schools, do you ask a couple of teachers to provide the 10 recs needed or just 2 teachers for 5 recs apiece? Right?

If so, the usual thing is to ask 2 teachers. Typically recs ask more or less the same thing so the teacher can use the same response with slight modifications. If everyone asks only 2 teachers leaves other teachers alone to write recs it reduces the total amount of work the teachers have to. A more important reason, though, is that by asking only 2 you can focus on getting GOOD recs. it is critical that when you ask a teacher for a rec you also ask that teacher if they will be able to write a strong rec. Even if you think the teacher likes you (maybe they don't!). Even in you got an A in the class. While it can be uncomfortable for a student to ask a direct question like this to a teacher, it HAS to be done. In the book "The Gatekeepers" is an example of a bad rec.

There were times, I must admit, that I thought Tiffany might have taken a stronger interest in mastering the material in our course. When I saw that Tiffany was a National Merit Semi-Finalist I was a bit surprised. While clearly bright and competent, I had seen in Tiffany neither an exceptional skill for testing nor a particular affinity for the subject.

I doubt the student set out to get a poor college req, but this is what can happen if you don't ask. the student did not get in, BTW.

Be sure you ask for all of them at one time. Don't ask for 3 schools, 2 weeks later come back for another one, and just before the deadline say you've decided to apply to 1 more school. Teachers have other recs to write and regular work to do, so try to minimize the impact by asking for all of them at once.
