Received HPME Application...what's next?

I was selected to receive an application to Northwestern's HPME program and I was wondering what the selection process is like? Are there people from both Northwestern's undergraduate schools as well as from the Feinberg School of Medicine that read the application? Is there an interview process before they reach a final decision? What are the statistics like for this program? There's really not a whole lot of information about this program on their website...

also if you are selected to apply for this program does that mean you're pretty much guaranteed at the very least to be accepted to the university?

getting selected to apply means nothing. it only means you have met the minimum requirements that they stated in the application.

oh ok, so how many students end up receiving an application and apply to this program? like ballpark range.

a good amount (I think around 1000)

What do you have to do in the application? I haven't send my HPME card yet.

there's a separate school report page to be filled out by our guidance counselor, additional essay questions, and an additional letter of recommendation. you also have to apply to one of the undergraduate schools at Northwestern and complete the corresponding application.

DukeBlueDevils,

They do show stats on their website:
Entrance Requirements

basically all that tells you are the average test scores of admitted applicants. it doesn't give you any idea about acceptance rates or the number of students applying...but thanks for pointing that out.

Old stats (2003):

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/multiple-degree-programs/2378-northwestern-hpme-part-1-a.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/multiple-degree-programs/2378-northwestern-hpme-part-1-a.html</a></p>

HPME Admitted Student Profile:
Top 1% of high school class
SAT 1 verbal 760
SAT 1 math 775
ACT composite 34
SAT II Chem. 765
SAT II Writing 750
SAT II Math 2C 785

Application Information:
Approximately 900-1000 sent inquiry cards
Approximately 700 received supplemental application
90% of applicants completed the supplemental application.
140 applicants were invited to interview
Approximately 60 students were offered admission to fill 50 spaces.

is it 50 spaces every year? or does it fluctuate from year to year?

That used to be their target size. But I seem to recall they cut it down to 30-40 not long ago. I am not sure.

i think they've been trying to cut down on the number of hpme students

^if that's the case, it may have something to do with the rising stats of the med school students: Entering Class Profile
It's virtually identical to
[url=<a href="http://www.med.upenn.edu/admiss/2006_class.html%5DUPENN">http://www.med.upenn.edu/admiss/2006_class.html]UPENN</a> || School of Medicine || Admissions Office || 2006 Class/url

I am not taking anything away from HPME kids but I think as the NU med school is getting more and more competitive (the latest stats show the test scores are on par with a top-5 med school), a gap may start to form between HPMEs and those through the regular route. Downsizing may be a way to control the impact, if there's any.

well i know the rice/baylor program is only 14 students so maybe NU did cut it down some...

^if i am not mistaken, rice/baylor has always been a small program. whether NU cut it down or not has nothing to do with rice/baylor. HPME is a pioneering program established in 1961. it copies no one. :)

Many colleges are either cutting down their BS/MD programs or doing away with them altogether. There's just no reason to take HSers than there are so many qualified college applicants in this day and age.

Last time I looked, HPME takes around 25 kids/yr.

The link I posted (post #14) shows that 45 HPMEs entered NU med school. Most of them probabaly started their undergrad in 2005.
