Receiving Financial Aid as a U.S. Citizen, but son of Illegal Immigrants?

I was born and have lived in California for my entire life. My parents, though, were both born outside the U.S. and came here illegally. I was unaware of this and only found out when the time came to file the FAFSA, and I had to put 000-00-0000 as their SSN.
My mother works and files her taxes(using a TIN) with my dad, as they are married, but my dad(now a dislocated worker) was injured last year and only worked for a few months. When trying to submit my FAFSA, an error pops up as it does not allow parents with no SSN to put “Will file” or “Already filed”. I don’t know what to do, as I can’t make up a SSN, but I also can’t say they don’t file their taxes.
I have worked hard during school and actually have a chance of attending some decent universities, and probably escaping the low-income class, but without financial aid that isn’t possible. I am really worried about this issue and just want to be able to attend a school.
Please help me.

Bump. I would appreciate any answers :frowning:

You have to use 000-00-0000 for your parent’s SSN. That instruction is on the federal aid website: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/parent-info#parent-citizenship Just follow the steps to create your parent’s FSA ID. It looks like this can now be done online. In the past, it was necessary for parents like yours to print out a request for a PIN, sign it, and mail it in. It took a while to get the PIN by return mail. If that turns out to still be the case (the instructions will be buried somewhere in the website), it could be faster overall for you to print out the paper FAFSA, complete it, and mail it in. https://fafsa.ed.gov/options.htm

You will not be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (online link to federal tax forms) because your parents file with an ITIN. This may slow down the processing of everything a bit. Stay in communication with the financial aid officers at the places you are applying to. You aren’t the only student in your situation. The aid officers have worked with students like you before.

Wishing you all the best!
