US Citizen Filing for FAFSA with Undocumented Parents

I am a high school senior having trouble applying for FAFSA. I am a legal US Citizen but both my parents are undocumented, yet my dad still files taxes with the 1040 form. As I have read on a few of these threads, I posted my dad's SS# as 000-00-0000, but when I put in his income and try to submit the FAFSA application I get the error message "You reported that the father's/stepfather's Social Security Number (SSN) is all zeroes (000-00-0000), and the mother's/stepmother's SSN is blank or all zeroes. You also reported that the parents' tax return status is filed or will file, and the tax return is not a foreign tax return."
After receiving this message, I tried putting "Will not file" when asked if my parents will submit an IRS tax return for 2011. However, once I tried submitting again, an error message appeared now saying "You reported that the student's parents will not file an income tax return, but the amount you reported for father's and mother's income appears to be over the minimum amount required for filing a tax return. Change the answer to tax return status or income amount for father and mother."
I now do not know what to do next to fill out the FAFSA application, which I must file because without financial aid, I will not be able to attend college.
My basic question is what do I do now to file my FAFSA?

Contact FAFSA by using the “Contact us” link at the top of the FAFSA page.

Please dont trust me on this, but I think you and ur parents have to be documented to receive federal government. I remember one of my undocumented friend saying this.

That is not true. As long as the student is a US citizen/permanent resident s/he is eligible for federal aid regardless of parent’s status. Did you put in the 000’s without dashes?

I think your parents should have put on their 1040 form their ITINs (individual taxpayer identification numbers), which they had to get in order to file taxes. I think you would put those number in the FAFSA.

The ITIN doesn’t work on the FAFSA. That is why parents in this situation have to use 000 00 0000.

Have your undocumented parents contact a lawyer.

It has nothing to do with filing the FAFSA. please be reminded that your parents are ineligible to receive a pin. You must print out the signature page, have one of them sign and mail to FAFSA.

If your parents are earning an income, they are still required to file taxes. Change your status to will file and then amend the fafsa after they file their taxes using their INIT.

Contact the college financial aid offices. Some will accept a paper fafsa, one that is printed out and completed, but not processed through FAFSA. This varies college by college. They would ask for copies of the same documents, such as copies of the taxes filed for 2011.

I agree with the poster above to also contact FAFSA directly and ask if there is a way to actually file through them.

Best of luck!
