Recent Changes to the Parent Forum

I have no objection to the new sub-forum.

The new naming structure adds no value, however.

If I may join the chorus …

cc is an organic community. I have no problem with the subforum (though it did seem like an overreaction to criticism by one former poster who admitted he/she hadn’t posted in years; I mean, you’d think cc would be more responsive to its current, regular clientele rather than a fair-weather fan). But the rigidity of the thread name change doesn’t reflect the spirit of the cc that I’ve come to know and love.

A recent change that flopped was the green boxes. The Powers That Be recognized that the change didn’t add to the community and, in fact, detracted from the cc spirit. I hope a reversal will occur in this matter as well. As my 2014 and Beyond brethren have stated, the Beyond has meaning – meaning that I think cc would embrace – and others recognize that. If you don’t follow that thread regularly, you wouldn’t know that we have regular posters from other years – I assume because they embrace the inclusiveness of our little group. Yes, we have a private FB group, too, but many of us have stayed with cc because we share a sense of “giving back” to the community that helped us. Many of us post in “our” thread, but we try to help others in other threads as well. The “one size fits all” renaming of threads is counter to the “take all comers” attitude that I, for one, have appreciated about the forum.

Lastly, I agree with those who say the new naming convention is more confusing, not less. I find it more difficult to find “my” threads in the subforum than I ever did on the main Parents page.

At the risk of being the only voice for this view, I find the uniformity of the titles of threads to be a welcome improvement. I had even asked on “my” thread how others found it, because it was always so difficult for me to “see” it. The only response I received was to subscribe to the thread. But I saw that as adding additional steps to the process.

Now I’m learning that many of you were looking for that one unique word in the title. I guess my problem was, I was always looking for a number, and that number was used in several other thread titles as well. I don’t believe “my” thread had a unique word in the title, so that contributed to making it difficult to see, at least for me.

On my last visit to the 20xx sub-forum, I was aware of how relieved I was to easily spot"my" thread quickly. I didn’t realize it had been causing that much stress before!

12rmh18 - I am also confused. I have no idea why the word “Beyond” creates ambiguity. The word “Beyond” means exactly what is says. Some of our students will be in school beyond 2014, some are taking more time for undergrad, and some are continuing on in grad/professional school. I don’t see any ambiguity there at all.

Good post, Youdontsay!

Obviously there are some new guidelines that I’m not aware of… can someone point me to the terms of service?

Never Mind - found them here… <a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_delete_post[/url]”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_delete_post&lt;/a&gt;

can someone show me where moderators are allowed to change the names of threads. I see where they can edit posts but where does it say they can change the names of threads?

If the mods think that the parent threads are “low-value,” they clearly haven’t seen the types of things we discuss (and how much money they cost). The mods must have AdBlock running on their computers, because otherwise they’d see all the Nordstrom’s, Neiman Marcus and other high-end ads that show up on the page! And besides, after we finish paying all this ^%$# tuition, we have disposable income again.

I suspect a certain MOB thread recently accounted for sales of a large number of dresses, and not just for MOBs!

These parent threads are a community creation. It would be nice to have that respected.

Moderation. CollegeConfidential.com moderators and administrators may edit, move, and delete posts to make them more accessible or to bring them into compliance with our TOS. If an edit changes the context or meaning of the post in any significant way, moderators will usually include a note that the post has been edited in the post itself. All moderation, however, is performed on a “best efforts” basis - each poster is fully responsible for his/her own posts, and each visitor is responsible for what he/she reads. Offensive posts should be reported to the moderators, and every effort will be made to remove them as soon as possible. Out of respect for both moderators and policies, discussion of moderator actions and forum policies is welcomed via private message or e-mail; these issues are off-topic for the forums.

Hmm - that talks about “edit, move, and delete posts” - where does it talk about threads which are groups of posts?

FlyMe, no prob. ALL opinions are welcome, I would think.

The title of a thread is part of the original post. As stated earlier, editing the titles of threads, moving them, or merging them is a routine activity on College Confidential. A routine activity that has helped this forum for the past decade. The organization of forums and sub-forums is part of the administration and moderation of this site.

In this precise case, we made an exception in discussing a matter of organization and moderation in the public forum, and made the effort to explain our decisions. The organization of the Community forum will remain a work-in-progress for some time.

We thank you for your input.
