My d (hs junior this fall) visited Haverford this summer and she liked many aspects of the college and thinks it may be a good fit for her. However, since it was the summer, she did not get a good sense of the student body and student life. While we plan to revisit during the school year, I was hoping to get some input about campus life, social scene, activities, etc. Much of what we have been reading on CC and other sites has not been very recent. Thank you!
Vibrant social scene that is very intimate because of the size. Haverford attracts a special type of person because of the Honor Code. Interaction with Bryn Mawr is strong if you want it.
Thanks!
My kids both visited Haverford, and thought it had an almost communal vibe. Outgoing D1 loved that, and introverted D2 thought it felt terrible.
I can see how there would be that difference in opinion. My daughter is also an extrovert and she liked your comment that it had a communal vibe as well! Thanks for your reply!
Moved DS in yesterday to begin his freshman year. My introvert loves the communal feeling. Couldn’t really picture him anywhere else.
@epeemom, Congratulations and best of luck! Great to hear that he loves it. So far it is our favorite visit
DS is a senior there, and he loves it, even though it wasn’t his first choice. The campus has a very different vibe than most other colleges. It is very communal and everyone is very open and accepting of others and not the least bit competitive (except in sports). That being said, it is also very diverse - the students tend to be anywhere between nerdy and athletic in their personalities so whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, there is a place for you. My son is an introvert, but he has made some very close friends, and he has been given some wonderful opportunities for lab work and internships that he may not have had in a larger university.
Thanks for your input! Glad to hear how much he loves it! Bets of luck to you all.
2.5 weeks in and he loves it! I asked him last night if he wanted to apply as a transfer to his first choice (which happens to be the same as Megan’s son’s first choice) and he was horrified and said something like hell no.
He absolutely loves his Customs group, and is finding his classes challenging but manageable. Honestly he has just blossomed there (if that’s something that boys do:-)
Wonderful! Customs was one of the unique experiences we enjoyed hearing about. Have a wonderful year!
Epeemom, so glad to hear your DS loves Haverford so much!
