Things to do at Haverford and school spirit

I'm 99% sure I'm going to ED Haverford at this point in the application process. I fell in love with the school at first sight last year and I always knew that Haverford was where I wanted to be. As my name implies, I am looking to major in the biological sciences and I have no doubt that Haverford is the place for me academically. However, my only concern is that I am a pretty active and social person who always like to do things when I'm not working, and Haverford came off as really quiet. I enjoy relaxing and having casual conversations with friends on the weekends, but I also like to get out and use up some of my extra energy. Anyone know what goes on at Haverford? I know its not a big party school but how often are there parties? Do people go into Philly often? I know there are a ton of clubs and I plan to get involved, but if anyone can provide any other information it would be very much appreciated.

Also, could someone describe school pride at Haverford. One of the things I'm looking for is to find a place where people just love their school. I know this isn't Duke, but do people generally have a lot of Haverpride?

I’m just a Havermom, but maybe I can help a little. I have to agree with you that Haverford does seem quiet - lots of studying going on I guess. But there are parties going on as far as I know, and the school is very liberal about them. However, I know one was shut down when too many Villanova students showed up, making it unsafe.

There are also a lot of other events going on that are not associated with drugs or alcohol at the same time. There is even a themed house this year known as Nerd House, which hosts many different kind of events for those who don’t party. And the school just finished running a Human/Zombie game, where all those who participated (including the President!) were either Humans or Zombies. The Zombies had to tag the Humans to change them into Zombies, and the Humans had to shoot them with dart guns or socks to keep them away. You couldn’t target anyone inside a building, however. At the end of the game (I think it lasted 2 weeks), there were only 19 humans left. The kids had a great time. There were even kids staked outside buildings at all hours, waiting for the humans to come out, so they all had to be really resourceful!

I don’t know how often people go to Philly, but I think they go into the local towns quite frequently. There is a bus that goes out that way as well, I believe.

As for Haverpride, there is a lot of it, even though sports are not as popular as in some larger colleges. Haverford is truly a unique place, and the kids there take a lot of pride in that. Talk to any of them, and you’ll realize how much they love it there.

Thank you so much for your response! I’m not a huge party person so the fact that they aren’t crazy about it is a plus for me personally. Also I read about the Humans vs Zombie game and it looked like a lot of fun. I love that Haverford is the type of place where even the President gets involved in these types of activities.

Thank you for your time it really means a lot!

I think there’s also the Fords Against Boredom, a group dedicated to non-alcohol related fun. Like making cheesesteak runs into Philly. Just something I remember from the tour that D thought sounded like fun, since she’s not into alcohol-fueled parties either.

I forgot about FAB! Yes, they organize a lot of events for those who want something other than a party atmosphere.

Nerd House will probably only exist this year since the house changes themes each year. Each year groups of students get together and present their themed idea to the housing board who then votes on who they would like to live in the Yarnall house. This year the nerds won! They’ve had movie night, game night, and murder mystery night to name a few events. Only at Haverford could you be proud of your nerdness and people would flock to you for fun!! LOL!
