LurkNessMonster, Pitt is definately much less party-intensive. Obviously, there will be your fair share of partiers, but it is in no way like PSU. A large part of that is due to location. At Pitt, because of its location in the city, there are so many more social alternatives to drinking. At PSU, kids are basically stuck on campus, so many of them resort to drinking. So to answer your question, yes, there are those who do nothing but drink on weekends at Pitt, but there are much fewer of them and they are much easier to avoid than at PSU.

HAHA! I guess it depends on who you ask! This past weekend, the first really beautiful weather in Pittsburgh this spring, found hundreds of students spending the afternoon sunbathing, playing outside, etc. My son wondered out loud why they weren't inside studying for finals this week.

My sister attended PSU and I visited many times. Way more drunks at Penn State! Lots more studying at Pitt. (not that PSU doesn't have some excellent students and top notch programs)

Yeah, I'm sure there are partiers and drinkers, but there are just as many who are not (probably more.)

And the beginning of freshman year is the worst no matter what school you go to. Kids like to go crazy with their new freedom, but the novelty wears off for most people rather quickly.

pat2323, i checked out pitt this weekend, and i was truely shocked and amazed.. the city was clean, there was a ton of stuff to do and the campus was awesome... pitt is in such a great area which opens up to the city.. idk how people can not like it

Glad you enjoyed yourself, fisch2332. In the seven or so years since I first started going to Pitt, I have not met a single person who has visited the school and said, "I didn't like it." There have been several people who were unhappy with their college experience, but generally if they weren't happy at Pitt, they weren't happy anywhere. The only people who don't like Pitt are those that do not want to be in the city.

hey pay2323, what do u think would be better for school a desktop or a laptop.. i know desktops are more reliable, dont get as slow as fast and are less prone to being stolen, while laptops are extremely convenient.. what do u think?

fisch2332, it depends on what you want to do. My personal preference is laptop, because I like being able to go outside to do work, and I don't run many complex applications on my personal computer. If you plan on just doing work in your dorm and/or if you're a big gamer, you should probably go with a desktop. But if you get a laptop, you can take it to class and type your notes.

All of my son's engineering buddies have laptops, and they seem to like them. I may be tempting fate by saying this, but they don't lock them down and nobody has had one stolen. But certainly you should be careful by locking your laptop or your room, and don't leave it unattended in common areas. And just to be super-safe, back up any computer work you have, just in case of theft or crash.

All kind of wifi opportunities in and around Pitt/CMU.

Go for the laptop.

In terms of brand, Dell has always been my choice, but they've been going through some problems lately, as has the new Windows Vista. It seems like Apple is really on the rise.

Alright! My Jets just drafted Darrelle Revis out of Pitt!

J-E-T-S! JETS! JETS! JETS!

yeah i was thinking dell, do u know if pitt gives a discount on dells?

Yes they do. Check it out:

Hey guys, I'm leaving tomorrow for vacation and I won't have access to a computer. If there are any pressing questions, please ask me now.

My daughter and I attended the honors college presentation in March, and the weather was so bad that we didn't take an actual tour. So I kind of feel as if I don't know things about Pitt that I should know. I was wondering about student clubs and organizations. I don't see anything about clubs on the web site. What are clubs like at Pitt? Are kids active? Where can my daughter get a list or find out what's available? Is there a club day?

LurkNessMonster , You can search here for organizations at Pitt:
http://www.sorc.pitt.edu/search/index.html

Clubs at Pitt are extremely popular. Pitt has over 400 student clubs including music and theatre groups, sports clubs, fraternities and sororities, a campus radio station, and seven student-produced publications. And a student can create an officially recognized club himself as long as he has ten members.

They do have an activities fair at the beginning of the year where clubs will set up tables at the student union and students can check them out and sign up.

Here's some good articles from the Pitt News about clubs:
