Hi,
I’ve heard of the recent suicide of student class of 2017. Is this something they will be informed of?
We (parents) received an email from KBott informing us of a student death. There has been no official notice that it was suicide, although most of the students think that is what it was. The memorial service is tomorrow. Counseling was made available to anyone who needed it.
I am so sorry to hear of this. How very, very sad. Thoughts and prayers to her family and friends.
WC President Bottomly notified the Wellesley Community that a member of the Class of '17 died via a brief “In Memoriam” post. The cause of death was not mentioned (I believe that whenever a student dies, the parents decide how much information they wish to be publicly shared). The post also mentioned that the Stone Center would be open till 8 p.m. that evening.
Very sad. And a very disappointing response. A few extra hours at the counseling center? Wow. That’s pathetic. But expected.
There was a memorial service (I think it was/is today, not yesterday, as I had posted), and there was a gathering in the multi-faith center last week. I don’t think Wellesley is any worse than any other college at wanting to keep student deaths under wraps, but it is very unsettling to us parents. Knowing the suicide rate of a school before applying would be very helpful to an applicant in judging the mental health climate there. But I’m not going to hold my breath that such statistics will be showing up in college guides any time soon.
