Hey guys. My name is Candice and I'm a relatively new member of CC and have been trolling the RPI forums for the longest time. I just wanted to give a quick overview of my experience visiting the school.
RPI remains my first choice as I want to be a communication major, more specifically EMAC. The department head was kind enough to set up for me to sit in on the class. The students were working in groups to build an imaginary business. It included crating a logo, mission statement, etc. One small group even stopped and spent some time welcoming me to campus and answering some of my question. Afterwards, I joined the official tour being given around campus. Our tour guide was class president and was an excellent speaker. He was truthful in saying RPI was not a party school, but that students still had a great time through the myriad of clubs and activities. The EMPAC and biology building were simply gorgeous. Sage and the rest of the academic buildings had a classical look that I liked. The dorms were somewhat blah and small. I wasn't really that impressed. The dining hall was the same way as well.
Being a girl myself, I was really curious in that notorious ratio. To be honest, I saw many more girls in the classes and during my tour than expected. It was a surprise. I don't see the gender ratio being much of an issue if anyone attends.
Overall, the visit confirmed my thoughts on RPI. The prestige of the university is still there, and the people I dealt with were kind and courteous. Crossing my fingers that admissions will consider me for their class of 2016. :)
