I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong forum.

Hi I recently just got my passed the GED test and will be attending community college in a few months. I dropped out of high school when I was 17 and am now 18. If I was still in HS I would be a senior right now. I never took the SAT's. My question is if I know for sure I am going to a community college, does it matter? I've been researching a bit and come to the conclusion that the SAT is sort of just a pre college exam. As in you take it to better your chances if you are trying to go to a university. (correct me if I am wrong.) So would it even matter if I took it? I do plan to achieve the best I possibly can at my time at CC. I do want to go to an ivy league school after CC. (I know the chances are slim) I dropped out for personal issues, it didn't have anything to do with difficulty.

I want to go to MIT. I know its literally one of the hardest schools to get into. As a transfer I know its near impossible. Do I even have a chance? Even if I do not get into MIT, I still want to know all the possible things I can do that will help me either get into MIT or a school similar. If MIT seems far fetched please tell me some other schools that do not seem so out of reach. If I haven't given enough information then I will gladly answer any questions hoping to better understand my predicament. Thank you :D

You have a chance at anything right now. But, at some point, you’ll probably want to take the SATs. I’m sure a school like MIT would want to see that and some subject tests from someone who went to a CC. But, you know? No rush. Just go and have a good first semester, and worry about all that in a while.

Congratulations, by the way. Good job.

Thank you!

So should I take the SAT now and then again sometime when I’m finishing CC? (If I can even do that?) I know its a while from now but I’m just wondering what a school like MIT looks for. I know perfect grades and all that. What I am wondering is what sort of extra curricular activities do they look for. My community college has a transfer program so I plan on attending for a max of two years. I want to make the best of it.

I got my GED and I’m going to CC also. I have no plans to take the SAT but I’m just going to a state school. I think this is one to talk to a counselor at your CC about. I think it would also be worth it to call MIT and talk to a counselor there too to get a definite answer and you could also talk about what they are looking for in a transfer applicant. If I had to guess, I would say that you need to do something unique that demonstrates your skills so that you stand out among the other applicants.

Good Luck!
