Can you get anything other than CC with a GED?

I was wondering...can you get into any college that is not a "least selective" school with a GED if you have good SAT/ACT scores? Has anyone ever done this before? Also, does it matter how well you do on the GED, or is a GED just a GED?

Yes, many state schools will accept GEDs (and there are many excellent and well-known state schools). For the most part, the top, most-selective colleges won’t accept a GED, but there are a lot of great private and public schools that will. They may not be Ivies, but still good schools. As far as the importance of the actual score, I have no idea.

Many top schools, including Ivies, don’t actually require a high school diploma. I have a GED and a bachelor’s and law degrees from Harvard. The only school I applied to that had a problem with my GED was U of Wisconsin. (The others didn’t accept me, but they considered me eligible to apply.)

The score on the GED won’t matter. The question is, how did you do in high school, or whatever you did instead of high school? I’ve known homeschooled students and students who left high school for a professional career in athletics or performance who got a GED and got into top schools. Why are you considering a GED?

I left high school pretty early…so my high school record won’t help me. I was just wondering if there was anything besides the colleges that accept everybody in the realm of possibility for freshman year.

If you do well at any college for one year, there are many good colleges that will then be happy to accept you as a transfer student. They will care much more about your accomplishments during that one year of college than anything that happened beforehand.

Yes, it can happen, but it might make a lot of sense for you to plan to transfer if you think you’d fit in at a highly selective school. Some small LACs might be interested in the story you have to tell about why you left high school and what’s changed in your life since then. Have you been working?

You can quickly find out whether a specific college requires a GED or a high school diploma by searching online for the name of the college and “common data set.” Most colleges publish a CDS. Section C of the CDS details admissions policies; Question C3 addresses the college’s high school completion requirement.

Wofford College in South Carolina accepts students with a high school diploma or a GED.

Individual private colleges may consider your application without a high school diploma in certain circumstances. I attended a small private college without either a high school diploma or a GED because I skipped my senior year of high school; I later went on to earn a law degree and an MBA from U.Va.

Yes…been working. At this point, I’m wondering what starting point options are possible.
