they just said whoever gets the high-achieving applicant reception invitation are both admitted and accepted to the honors program …

^ Are you serious!? Holy ****! If that’s true, I am beyond ecstatic.

you did not go today, or are you going next weekend …
I am not kidding you …
now I have to decide between UCI and UCSB (assuming UCSD will kick me just like UCLA)

I was going to go to the San Jose reception, but it filled up.

This is great news; thanks for the update! And you have a good shot at UCSD if you got honors at UCSB Good luck.

dude, if you sign up, then you will have a name tag, that is all
go even if they said it is filled up … they don’t check anything …

they told us we are admitted in the general session
when we were in the breakout session, someone asked how one can get into the honor program, and they said you are in the honor program if you are invited to the reception …

Jesus, what is your major ???

I am in computer science, I think the program in UCI is slightly better, but UCSB have a 5 year option of getting BS/MA which is very appealing to me …

Jesus, I hope this makes your weekend !!!

My name is JeSuis. It’s French for “I am” :p

And I applied undeclared letters and sciences. I’m just going to wait and see if any spots open up for the San Jose session.

okay, I am going to enroll in French so that I can communicate with you in French, hee hee hee

undeclared letters and sciences, are there any major you like better than the others ???

they have an open house on April 9th, you can get more information from here

I’m pretty sure I want to go into math and/or science, but I really have not made a decision yet.

Thanks for all the info. I hope I’m accepted to honors; that would be unbelievable!

do you know how high the computer science department ranks

If you received the letter for the reception and you applied for the college of engineering, you are in with honors 100% certainty. If not for the college of engineering, it’s not a guarantee that you are in with honors but it is a high chance.

fox, did you attend the reception and went to the engineering breakout session ???

I was just coming to CC UCSB to ask about this reception and found this thread! My son just received the reception invite (would attend DC location). I think this is a really GOOD SIGN (similar to a “likely letter”) since it mentions “top applicants” being invited. We are actually going to be in SoCA in April, so may start planning a UCSB tour…did NOT expect this being OOS.

DS wants very much to attend the reception in San Jose next Saturday. He RSVP’d for both parents and himself. Now he can’t go as he has an obligation to attend an event for a group that has given him a scholarship. Would it be inappropriate for me- Mom- to go on my own? I would love to give him the good news and we have some housing questions and course questions that need answering. Please give me your opinion as to whether I should attend on his behalf. Thanks!

Minnymom- go ahead and go on your own. Trust me, UCSB wants to “sell” you on the school as much as your son…especially if you are footing the bill. You can always contact them to ask if you feel uneasy but I would just think of yourself as your son’s “representative” who is there to gather information. Might be nice to cancel your 2 extras, so some other families can get in. I hear it’s filling up?

Leakers- Yes, I did. I even spoke to the woman who was in charge of the honors program after the session and she told me that if we applied to the engineering department and were invited to the reception, then we are 100% in the honors program.

Oh, and to anyone who didn’t go…
Everyone who went was told they were admitted. [:

Anyone attend the “breakout” session for the College of Creative Studies? And if so, general impressions? My daughter is having diffculty determining whether it is a well-run and highly respected program or too “loosey-goosey”. BTW, she is an art student.

Leakers or hakufox…do you know if EVERYONE at reception was told they were accepted regardless of major,or were you being specific about engineering?

in the general session, they told everyone that was invited are accepted, which caused a big applause …
and in the breakout session, the engineering folks said they are also be in honors too …
not sure what the situation is on creative studies and letters & sciences

I like UCSB mainly they have a very good graduate program in computer science and then they have the program that you can get your BS/MA in 5 years (usually it is 4+2), which will shorten the time (you will be earning 60K a year) and lessen the financial burden (by 30K, assuming it costs 30K a year), so in essence that is a difference of 90K …

if you are an honor student, you get priority enrollment which could be a big deal because of budget cut and they might cut some of the classes …

Thanks Artsymom for the thumbs up on attending the reception. Absolutely will revise the RSVP so others may attend.

Yes, I’m also there for CompSci. It was really impressive. The breakout session was good. [: In addition to Engineering, I attended part of CCS and spoke to some of the current CCS students and the faculty and the program seemed good too. I’m most likely staying in Engineering though since the reception invitation is also my guarantee of honors.

Oh and everyone was accepted who attended. Only the accepted engineering students were guaranteed honors.
