I just recieved a letter about a "UC Santa Barbara Reception for High Achieving Applicants." I've never heard of this before. What exactly is this about and how important is it? Would I be better off just taking a campus tour?

just got the invite!! I think I read about this in last year’s forums. let me go see…

It’s pretty much a guarantee that you’re in. It’s their way of recruiting top acceptees.

DS received his invitation today. Don’t want to get hopes up prematurely, but sounds like it means an acceptance is coming… yes?
We will attend San Jose event. Congratulations!

Do you mind sharing some stats? I have received similar letters from other UCs but not UCSB

I received one today as well. See some of you at the Los Angeles reception! :D

My S also received his invitation today. Never knew about this event but being invited seems pretty cool. AtSPX1, we’ll be at the LA reception as well.

petaandpita, thanks for the helpful links.

Does anyone know if this also means you got into your first-choice major?

I was already admitted to UCSB in October and received the LAX reception notice this week. So it probably is a good sign for those still waiting for final notification.

How were you admitted to ucsb in October. My S is an ELC student, but he has not recieved admission notification yet. He did receive ths invite, but still not formal admissions.

Before I even applied, I received a letter in October from UCSB and UC Davis welcoming me to the class of 2015 due to being an ELC in the top 1.5 %. ( GPA 4.5 and a valedictorian). I think there’s two levels of ELC-top 1.5% that gets a number to put on your aps identifying you, and the top 10%. A friend has a 4.3 GPA and got a letter that he is an ELC, but is in the top 10%, so no formal admittance letter from anywhere in particular.
I think they guarantee you a spot in a UC, but not necessarily your top choice and there’s no guarantee to UCLA or UC B. Since the letter came before applications could even be filled out, there was no way they would know I was even applying to UCSB or Davis.
Someone else I know got one accepting them to UC Irvine and UC Merced, so I think it’s just random…
Anyway, since I was already accepted and got the reception letter, I’m guessing it’s a good sign for your son as well.

This explains ELC. It’s top 4%:

[UCSB Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/ELC.asp)

is it confirmed that this means you are in at SB? Because im not top 12.5% i believe and not ELC either. and i received it? can anyone else help confirm?

if they think you are a high-achieving applicants and they are not accepting you, then there is something wrong …
I am sure they get the high-achieving list from students they are going to accept, so you are 99.9% in if you get the invitation, you will get the remaining 0.1% on March 21st when they issue the official acceptance …

i sure hope so!

got one today in mail also. No formal acceptance either, but got acceptance into dance program shortly after audition. Acceptance into dance clearly said that it is just dance, and that we need to wait for school
i guess we will be at SJ event

I received this letter in the mail today. It was really vague.

Hmm, I never thought of myself as a top applicant. How exciting!

Anyone attending the reception in LA today? Please send us NorCal invites a recap so we know what to look forward to next week-end. Thanks and Good Luck!

went to the reception today …
everyone that get invited are admitted and also in the honors program …
the general session last about 1.5 hours, the chancellor spoke and a panel answered general questions
then the breakout session, last about 1.5 hours, divided into 3 college breakout sessions, engineering, creative science, arts and science, they answered more college specific questions …
did not stay for the last session, 0.5 hours about housing and financial aid …

what is the exact requirement for honors? i got invited aswell but i doubt i have honors for anything lol
