Two of my colleges "recommend" me to take foreign language and science SAT IIs and claims that if I dont' take them, it wont' have any negative effects on my transcript.

Is this true? Why would they recommend ppl to take special tests than?

The colleges I am applying to "strongly" recommend taking two SATs and they imply its pretty much necessary and they don't say not taking them will have a negative effect, so I basically need to take them. But if your college actually says it won't matter then I suppose it would be true. But if they recommend it, its probably a good idea to do it since it would help your app. They're probly trying to see where your level of knowledge is in these subjects. But Im still not totally sure.

i was at the columbia admissions information thingy, and they said that we need either math and physics or chem. If I'm taking AP Bio this year, would they really care if I sent them the bio SAT II instead?

Indian, I strongly suspect that the Columbia admissions officer was specifying those SAT IIs for engineering applicants only. If you are a liberal arts applicant, you shouldn't be as restricted in your choice of exams.

Perhaps you should double-check this point with the admissions office before you decide which exams to take.

Do the colleges involved use the SAT tests involved for placement purposes if you matriculate? This could be one reason to recommend tests but say it doesn't matter in making admission decisions.

One school my daughter applied to recommended an SAT math subject test. But she didn't take it and was still accepted. They just wanted people to take it prior to coming (if they didn't have an AP calculus score) for math placement.

If you haven't already, you can always ask the schools directly.
