Recommend a digital tape recorder for lessons?

It was suggested we purchase a recorder and record lessons when our son takes sample lessons at colleges. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on recorders to purchase. Thanks!

The Zoom, H2 or H4, seems to be the current hands down choice.

The Zooms are highly recommended. If you want to pay more for a slightly better unit the Edirol R9 is also well recommended.

DD and her friends and studio all use the Edirol. I think both are good. I know we have had some threads on this before. This one is getting a little old now so updates are probably needed.

The Zoom H2 was highly recommended by a friend who supports himself in college by making pre-screening/audition recordings. He did my D’s and schools commented on the excellent quality, so I had no hesitation about buying the same model. Check out e-Bay!
You can even find web sites which allow you to choose among several instruments and recorders and select which sounds the best for your needs. If I can find it again, I’ll post the link, but here are some review sites.

Olympus ls10 works great.

DS has a Zoom H2 and loves it. Easy to use and very portable. You mention using this for recording sample lessons at colleges…you will have to ask if this is permitted. Some places may not permit you to record a sample lesson.

My son has been really happy with his Edirol R-09hr recorder. The microphone quality is quite good and the wireless remote is a big help in recording ensemble rehearsals where the best placement of the recorder is away from the student.
For many, the Edirol’s audio quality and reliability is worth the extra cost.

Zoom H4n is the newest Zoom and my son loves it. Bit more expensive but a solid choice and very versatile.

Olympus is good if you want something tiny with built in usb. D uses it for lessons. Pretty cheap.

Another vote for the Zoom line.

I’m looking in to this myself at the moment. I think I’m going to go for the Yamaha Pocketrak 2G - which seems a great compromise between quality and price. If you want to spend a bit more (quite a lot more actually!) then the Yamaha Pocketrak CX is worth a look also. I’ve heard very good things about both.
