There are just so, so many colleges that would work for your “stats”: what you need to describe is who you are and what you are looking for. Do you want a small college-or do you sense you’ll thrive in a large university? Is a sense of community important to you? City, rural…suburb? What are your priorities? What do you see yourself studying? How much structure do you need/want…versus you’d prefer a school where curriculum’s fairly flexible. What kind of people do you feel comfortable with and thrive being around? Does participating in class mean a lot to you, or would you rather have lots of large lectures? Where’s home and how far can you see yourself going? Does it need to be co-ed or would you thrive in an all-female environment? Start asking yourself these kinds of questions and post, more specifically if you can, and I think you will get responses.

Okay, well, I live in Illinois and I’m hoping to get away from the midwest, but if there’s some really great schools here (excluding my home state), I’m okay with that. I’m also more attracted to private schools, just because I go to a large public high school and hate it >.<. On that note, I also like to have a good relationship with my teachers and have small classes–I love knowing everyone and being in a small community. Suburb and rural areas are ideal! Personally, being far away won’t really bother me, as long as I can get home when I need to.

I was thinking about Bowdoin, Middlebury, Emory, and Carleton, and I’m really considering majoring in English and something else (maybe Biology, maybe music?)

I would say Emory sounds right. Also try Tufts and Reed for good matches. Kalamazoo college is a good safety and it is that perfect distance away from Illinois (far enough where your parents won’t visit all the time but it is only a 3 hour drive home).

Be sure to check the net price calculators at each school to make sure that they are affordable.

Make sure that you have at least one safety that you are certain will admit you, you are certain that you can afford, and that you like. Then you can shoot high or medium with the rest.

Maybe see if Truman State University and University of Minnesota - Morris (small public LAC type schools that are relatively inexpensive, even for out of state) can fulfill the safety criteria.
