@newjerseygirl98 actually, looking at CSULA’s admitted student stats, you definitely could get in. your SAT is in range. Add it to your list. Just don’t expect them to be generous with FA.
@mom2collegekids I’m from NJ, which is one state more expensive than CA. Only Hawaii, NY & Alaska are more expensive than NJ. So, I know about high rents. But a room would be about $600. An apartment could be 400-600 if I rented with one or two other students. But, the rooms include wifi & cable (in a shared room), while in a shared apt, we’d be splitting the bill. Do you think it’d just be cheaper to live on-campus? I know food is still high.
My mom is the one who said that. I guess because I’m an only child & she’s not a big spender, she could manage it. I was worried she may not be approved as cosigner. It doesn’t have to be a parent, right?
@ucbalmunus Would you like to see my list of nets for NJ schools? They’re all 20-20K, before Pell. Still, that’d be 15-20K (no R&B).
@Lbad96 Thank you, I know!
@newjerseygirl98 you’re very welcome!! And since when was Alaska more expensive than New Jersey?
Everyone: I’ve also considered working as a live-in nanny during college. I know it’s an idea that’s a little risky. But, I would have free room & board, cable, electricity & etc. Plus, I would have a job!
@LBad96 That’s what I said! I really doubt that’s true, haha.

Huh? Would you then only go to night school? Live in nannies take care of kids during the day while parents are at work.
@mom2collegekids I’m not sure about the times, because many said “perfect for college students”. I’m sure most positions would be during the day, though. Do you think it’d be cheaper to live on-campus?
And how would you find a live in nanny position? Craigslist? I would be extremely worried about an 18 year old, living 3000 miles away from home for the first time getting scammed or worse. I work for an apartment company with a heavy presence in LA. I know all about the LA rental market, including individual neighborhoods in East LA. Unless you have something lined up for sure (PM me for details on how to avoid rental scams), it is extremely risky to get a room, sight unseen, without going through an established company or a trusted friend/ relative.
@whenhen Care.com is a much better option than Craigslist. (I saw some pretty inappropriate “nanny” positions on Craigslist…) I’m a little worried about seeing an apartment/room before I’ve seen it. Do you think it’d be a better/cheaper idea to live on campus? I’ll PM you, thanks!
@ucbalumnus I meant 20-30K in my last post, sorry.
TCNJ best of my knowledge is NOT test optional except for art/music students. In fact , the average SAT score is
fairly competitive and considerable higher than what you post. They also focus on the top 10% of class students.
OP, your SAT scores are very low, which would, in all likelihood, require that you take both remedial Math and English courses, even if you attend a Community College. These remedial courses will add anywhere from 1 to 2 years to your College life. Proceed with caution.
15% Hispanic??? How’s that?
one grandparents or great grandparent is fully Hispanic, grandparent or parent doesn’t consider himself/herself Hispanic…?
@jym626 Its just an estimate from my mom, she doesn’t know much about her family. They did raise her, but her dad recently passed & she never talks with her mom.
@MYOS1634 Thanks!
@JamRock Two years!? I know others who’ve taken basic skills in college. My mom did, although she didn’t graduate. They didn’t go longer than expected.
In NJ, my English score is passing. (Not sure if that matters)
