I'll be a Junior this fall and am currently considering:
Duke
Vanderbilt
Emory
UNC Chapel Hill
Wake Forest
NC State
Clemson
Wofford

I really need to expand my list because most of those are reach schools. What are some other schools in the south that I'm a more likely candidate for? I plan on studying Biology, specifically Zoology. My Stats are:

4.93 Weighted, 3.875 Unweighted
2000 SAT (720 Writing) (700 Reading) (580 Math)
In top 10% of class and am likely to be salutatorian (of a class of 44 people)
Average extracurriculars

Improving math SAT will open more options. UGA and USC? UGA specifically has good animal programs. Some of these might not be such as reach if you are in state. You need to visit to see what size school you like. For instance, Wofford is very small (but very good) but might not have the specific classes beyond more general biology. Clemson and NC state are large schools, but different personalities. Clemson more rural. Important to know if you need aid or not.

Consider both Furman and College of Charleston. Both have impressive offerings in the sciences. Furman’s campus is beautiful, Greenville is a great town… Charleston is…Charleston. Can’t go wrong with either school.

You have OOS publics on your list. Will your parents pay for the high OOS rates? If not, many of those probably won’t work.

How much will your parents pay? If you don’t know, ask them. You need to know that info.

If you get your scores up, you’ll have more options…both for admissions and possibly for merit scholarships.

scmom12, yes, I will definitely need some financial aid

edited to add…just saw the above. Right now, many of your OOS publics won’t work. They don’t give FA to OOS students…except for UNC-CH. . Some might give you a good amount of merit money for higher stats.

OOS publics charge high OOS rates for a reason. they expect you to pay the high costs. Again, a few might give you merit for higher stats.

How much will your family pay and you need to find out if you would even qualify for the aid you need from the schools that give aid.

Tulane is about 6,000 undergrads; good financial aid; strong in biology (since it has a med school and a school of public/tropical health); not easy to get into but somewhat easier than say Duke, Emory or Vandy. Like those schools, Tulane is more of a school located in the South than a school of the South.

My DD is looking at similar schools/programs in this region. One school that looks interesting is Berry College in GA. However it is a very small school and since we are Jewish, there would probably not likely be any other Jewish students there. Berry has a good animal science program and has merit aid.

If anyone has any info about what it would be like to be a Jewish student at either NCSU, Clemson, or Furman, it would be appreciated. Greenville SC does have a Jewish community but I am not sure how active the students on campus are. Since this is not the topic of the thread- please PM me.

Elon is a good possibility and has biology.

I am not Jewish so I cannot comment on that aspect of Clemson but feel free to message me or let me know here if you have any questions about Clemson!!

William & Mary, Davidson are two of the best schools in the South. May be too much of a reach though. Agree that Furman, Elon may be good matches.
