One of my recommenders just informed me that they had uploaded an MIT specific recommendation onto the Common App and submitted it! I'm applying to MIT as well (non Common App) which explains why there was an MIT specific recommendation. Apparently it was only one line stating that I was MIT student material. I don't know if submitting it again is possible, but even so, I don't think I have the time to get another copy.

Will the other Common App universities I applied to find this offensive? Is there any was I can mitigate the damage done here?

Thanks!

Well… it isn’t great. I think you are saying that this “MIT-specific” copy is out there for each college you are applying to for them to download. Can you tell if they downloaded it yet?

If you don’t have a way to delete it (and for my kids only the Guidance Counselor office could do that), ask for the GC’s help via email – they may or may not have someone in the office this week, but at least they can look at this when they get back. Ask them to remove that letter for that college if it has not yet been downloaded. Then ask the recommender to give you a letter that is more generic (just remove any college specific references) and upload that for those colleges. It is okay if your rec letters are a few days late (or even a couple of weeks late) as long as your app and payment are on time.

If the letter is not set up yet for download to other colleges, don’t send it to them at all. Get an updated version and provide it later.

If another college has already downloaded it… not sure. Ask your Guidance Counselor for advice, I think.
