Hey there, I’m applying to Engineering at school “X” in the Fall 2018 Semester. I was just wondering how much a reccomendation letter from my current highschool Engineering teacher (who happens to be an alumni at the school) help me.
I’m no expert but I would say its just one piece of your admissions application. Obviously a strong recommendation from a teacher/alum who taught a class related to your field of study is a good thing.
Ask the person who can write the best recommendation, who admires the attributes you display in the classroom and who knows you a bit as a person. Don’t worry about the credentials of the recommender – admissions officers are interested in YOUR credentials not those of the person writing the letter.
So my bottom line would be if the HS engineering teacher can write you the best LOR and is an acceptable recommender for the school (check – some schools ask for a core subject academic teacher) then that is great – but don’t ask him/her because he/she is an alum of your top choice school or even because he/she teaches engineering.
