Recommendation letter

Do universities require to be sent an online recommendation letter even if the student sends the hard copy of recommendation letter ?

I would imagine so.

It’s easier to verify the origin of an online letter-- particularly one sent from a school email-- than an letter which could have been written and mailed by anyone.

In my school, letters are uploaded to Naviance, then forwarded by the College Placement Office. Once I’ve uploaded it, I’m all done regardless of where the kid applies.

No, it’s not a requirement. Colleges fully are capable of scanning and uploading hard copy letters to any student’s file.

“than an letter which could have been written and mailed by anyone.” Hunh??

For the first 300 years or so, US colleges had no problems with this method of accepting mailed rec letters. I see no indication that they’ve subsequently become incapable of it today.

I thought of the same thing. Even if they do ask for emailing them can i just scan my document and send it to them or the teacher has to type and send it? @bjkmom

They absolutely do not have to be typed for all schools. One of D’s friends attending a very selective school (<20% acceptance rate) asked her private music tutor (who is now in her 80’s) to write her a recommendation letter, as she had been first getting, then assisting with lessons, twice weekly for almost 14 of her 18 years. She gave her a beautifully handwritten letter, which was scanned and sent in to multiple schools. Even though she was rejected at several top schools, she got more acceptances than rejections.

I stand corrected.
