Recommendation letters from the same teacher

I have three or four teachers I know would provide me with strong recommendations. But I want to apply to about 6 different colleges and each ask for about two teacher recommendations. How many times can I ask a teacher for a recommendation. Would they be annoyed if I asked for 3 different rec. letters?

teachers are not going to personalize their letter for each college. Pick 2 teachers to write your recs, figure out what schools you are going to apply to. Once you’ve settled on a list of schools ask the 2 teachers for recs and ask them to send a copy to those 6 schools and provide stamped envelopes if they cannot be submitted online.

Thank you! That helps a lot @mikemac‌

No problem. One other bit of advice is to ask the teachers if they are going to provide you with a strong letter or if they suggest you ask someone else. It is not a good idea to assume someone will, even if you’ve done well in their class.

I know someone who was on the alumni scholarship committee for a well-known U and they regularly received letters of rec for the full-tuition scholarship that raked the kid over the coals. I assume the kids thought they’d get a strong letter. In “The Gatekeepers”,in which a NY Times reporter followed the admissions committee at Wesleyan for a year, is a real-world example of a bad rec. I’d bet that when the student asked for a rec she assumed it would be positive, but here is what she got:

This could have been avoided if the teacher had been asked if they would write a strong rec. The student did not get in.

At our school most teachers will let you read over it before finally submitting it.
