Recommendation letters

Hello,
I forgot to ask my teachers for letter of recommendation before school ended junior year. so I searched different websites and they told me not to ask via email. that means i have to ask when school starts. so do i ask the teachers the FIRST DAY of school senior year or do i have to wait about a week? And also the other teacher i want to ask wouldn't be teaching this year because he is continuing his education so i might have to ask him via email. Please what do I do? I'm running out of time.
Please Help. i need HONEST answers.
Thank you.

It is fine to ask the one who is on leave via email, go ahead and make a request so you will know if he agrees or if you have to find a new teacher to ask.

No it would not be appropriate to ask on the first day of school when they have a lot to do. Even the first week seems a bit presumptuous–of course you are not everyone’s first priority, right? But if it seems like things have settled down after a week, sure.

agree 100% w/Brown Parent. I think the advice not to email a LOR request is in play during the school session. Now w/summer break, I think it’s absolutely fine to state your case:

“Dear Mr/Ms Superteacher: I hope you’re enjoying your summer. I’m sorry to intrude but in the haste of the end of the semester, I forgot to visit with you to ask you a favor. If you are able to write me a strong Letter of Recommendation for my upcoming college and scholarship applications for the fall, I would be extremely grateful. I’d be happy to sit and meet with you at your convenience in Sept (or earlier) so you can learn more about me. If you prefer for me to ask someone else, I can definitely do that as well. Sincerely, IHeartJuice”

I wouldn’t find this bad or intrusive whatsover. Good luck

Thank you soo much BrownParent and T26E4.
Do you both agree that I can email both teachers during this summer to kinda reserve my spot? And then talk to them in the fall?
Also since i’ve moved school twice can i still ask teachers from 9th grade even if i didnt keep in contact with them. I was thinking I could email them to schedule an appointment with them so they get to know me better and possibly write me a LOR?

At most, all you’ll need are TWO teacher recs. Preferably from 11th grade. 10th or 9th is OK but only if they have continued to oversee your work. I don’t see how a 9th grade teacher from a school you no longer attend can be of ANY value to you. Yes, email them to request – this is not a formal protocol – you’re just asking. It’ll be all right.

E-mail the teacher about your intention and ask when would be a good time to meet with him/her when school resumed. You may approach more than 2 teachers by e-mail at this point if you have someone in mind. Even if they all say yes to you, you can still assign them differently in CommonApp. Some schools would allow up to 4 teacher recommendations. If you have a choice, pick teachers from different core subjects that taught you in 11th or at least in an advanced level class (e.g. AP in 10th grade is okay depending on the college requirement). Find one that may know you more than from the class and ideally someone knows you more than a year.
This process should have been started in Spring but it is still not too late to do it now. Once school resumes, the teachers would be crazy. An early notice would at least give them some time to think about what to put on your LOR although nothing is likely to happen until the week before deadline.

Thank you so much all of you. I have another question though which i that… Since I’m applying to six different schools, does that mean if the two teachers said yes, that they can give me recommendation for all the schools im applying to? Do i have to tell them that they have to right LOR for all six schools or I just send them all the schools info through CommonApp??

P.S
I only have two teachers in mind for this LOR writing. And i hope they would both write it for the six schools im applying to. I dont have anyone else in mind because i never really talked to a lot of my teachers and got to know them well because i wasnt really thinking about college then. SO will two teachers (Spanish & Math) be enough?

I love T’s sample email. D didn’t ask before school ended either and so she emailed a similar sort of message to her top choices basically saying she’d meet or provide the form (her school has a form with specific questions for teacher LORs) if the teacher was willing to write for her. She got an answer in the affirmative immediately from one, the other seems to be a little scattered…she’ll check back in fall or choose a different teacher.

You don’t need six individual LORs. You get one from each of your teachers and either upload to Common App or Xerox and mail to the colleges not on Common App. You use the same ones for all six schools (and scholarships you may be targeting). No college needs more than two teacher LORs. Indeed, many require zero, a few require one, very few require two.

If the schools are on commonapp, it is just one letter from each teacher for all of them. Some teacher may tell you how many letters they can write for you while all schools on commonapp are considered as one. One of my D’s teacher set a limit of 4 (including scholarships/admission applications) while the other 3 teachers did not. At the end, none of them need to write more than 3 letter.
If your 2 teachers for Math and Spanish have taught you in junior, that should be perfectly fine. There are not many schools that would ask for more than 2 LOR or many may allow more than 2.

Don’t be quite so panicked about this. Your apps aren’t all due in September… even at rolling admissions schools, you have time if you don’t get the recs for several weeks. Let the teachers know you will be using their letter for several schools. They probably have done this before, they know to make it generic so you can use it for multiple schools. So you are only requesting two. Colleges really don’t want more than they asked for, they have so much to review that they just want a complete set of what they requested for each applicant. The letters are uploaded through the Common App to the colleges you have selected, assuming they are Common App schools. At our kids’ school the guidance counselors handle this working with the teachers, but you can then see that the letter is successfully uploaded.

Also, know that colleges generally won’t penalize YOU if the letter comes in a little late. YOUR materials (application, essays, deposit) need to be in by the application date the college gives. But colleges get that guidance counselors and teacher sometimes are a little late with transcripts, LORs, etc. And colleges have so many applications to review, it is no issue if the package is not complete for a couple of weeks after the date, they just start with other applications. But I do agree if you are applying EA or ED or to a rolling admission school, you want to get moving on your apps in the fall. But self imposing a deadline like end of September (which you haven’t said you are doing, but it feels like maybe you are thinking that) isn’t necessary.
