I don't comprehend this

When do you ask your teachers for recommendations? Whether to applying early, or regular, when do you ask teachers? And its usually the teachers from Junior year? Does all the applying start the beggining of senior year, despite early, or regular decision?

confused.

I asked mine about two weeks b4 summer. I felt kinda stupid asking that early but I got them and they are fun to read when I m bored cuz its just good stuff about me =). I just went up and asked "I was wondering if you could write me a college recommendation letter.

I asked my teachers a couple of weeks before summer at the end of my junior year. They're usually the favorite teachers and would get bombarded with other recs during senior year, so at least they have mine to work on during the summer :)

I mentioned it to my teachers at the end of my junior year, but I gave them the actual forms a few weeks before the letters were to be mailed.

As I recall, most applications come out around August. The application is the same for early and regular decision (except for the statement you sign for ED), it's just the dates they are due which are different. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get some thoughts together for essays this summer.

The ^^^ posters are right, asking for LORs at the end of Jr year is a good idea, but as soon as school begins in the fall will work too. Just make sure you don't delay as teachers can only handle so many, and you want to give them plenty of time before the due dates. Jr teachers are probably the most often requested, you will not know Sr teachers well enough to ask for LORs from them. You probably only want to ask Fr or Sop year teachers for LORs if you had multiple classes from them, they know you extremely well, you took an AP course from them or some other strong reason.

Just a note on etiquette...

You don't just ask for a letter. Give the instructor a graceful exit opportunity and get the best possible letters by asking, "Do you think you know me well enough to write a strong letter of recommendation for me?"

The size of your high school may play a part too. No one here (the local high school is fairly small) asks teachers before summer vacation. The early birds ask a couple weeks into fall term. Most ask Oct/Nov for RD apps.

In a bigger school... yeah, asking early would probably be a big help!

soooo...the common application recommendation page never changes, i suppose? because if you give it before summer of junior year and need it for november or whatever of senior year..

That's true. You should make sure it doesn't say 2007-2008 on it. Otherwise they should be the same form.

You ask them before the end of junior year. You give them the forms in the fall, when you've finalized your college list. (You also give them stamped, addressed envelopes.)

Where do you get all these forms, etc? Where does she write the recommendations???

so confusedd.

The forms come with the applications (top schools mostly use the Common App, which includes it as well). They fill out the appropriate forms, which normally include the length of time the teacher has known the student, what subject he/she teaches, etc. Often they are asked to rate the student on a number of qualities using a scale where the highest is something like "One of the top few I've ever encountered in my career" and the lowest is "Below average." Then there's a separate part-- kind of like an essay question for them-- that usually asks, "Why do you think this student would be a good fit for our college?" or something similar to that.
Hope that helped :)

Go to The Common Application Online. In fact, since you won't be able to see the forms until later, just wait, then register, and there you will find the forms.

the title of this thread makes you sound foreign. just thought i would let you know. just word choice.

you should check out the common application form and talk to your guidance counselor for information regarding your applications. As for teachers, after your junior year (typically) you ask 2 teachers that you think know you the best enough to write you a good recommendation. But since you're a rising junior, you shouldn't worry about recommendations yet (other than not get in trouble).
