Hello! I’m currently a gr11 student, and over the summer, I’ll be doing research under a Harvard associate professor. I was wondering if for Harvard I could get an additional recommendation letter that isn’t from a teacher at my school when applying using common application.
The Common Application requires two letters of recommendation from high school teachers, so you specifically need to ask two teachers from high school who have recently taught you in an academic class. You can certainly ask the Harvard professor for an additional letter of recommendation (and label it as such) that he or she may send to Harvard or any other college.
Thanks @gibby for the response! Would they have to send it directly to Harvard separate from my common app, or do they do it through the common app too? Thanks!
Additional letters of recommendation (labeled as OTHER) are sent through the Common Application. Student’s need to invite the additional recommender by assigning them and their email address on the Common App: https://appsupport.commonapp.org/link/portal/33011/33013/Article/797/How-do-I-assign-my-recommenders. Or, the additional recommendation writer may FAX the recommendation to any school and it will be added to your file.
