I was just wondering how much, in the grand scheme of things, the recommendation letters “really” factor into the application review because…

In my interview at Barnard (my interviewer also happens to be the admission officer in charge of the region I live in, so she’ll be reading my application first), I raved about how wonderful my AP U.S. history teacher and the class were. I hoped to get a rec from him to bring additional cohesion to my application, but things didn’t work out so well.

Instead of him I asked my math teacher from last year. Would it seem strange/hurt my application to have a rec letter from her, despite the fact that math isn’t exactly my strong suit/passion in comparison with other subjects (but with teachers I couldn’t get a rec from)?

And if so, would the other recommendation letter (I am getting one from my Spanish teacher from last year) that I am pretty sure will be very good “make up” for the other one, so to speak?

Both letters of rec have to come from core subject teachers that have taught you in your jr/senior year, right? I'm going to get one from my jr. year AP English teacher and probably from my senior yr AP Gov teacher. My problem is that I really would like to get one from my Advanced Theatre teacher because I have worked with her on a very close level for all 4 years of high school and I know that she knows me the best out of all my teachers. Theatre is what I want to major in so I think that her rec would carry a lot of weight. We also talk a lot and she knows that I have a strong academic interest as well. She also has read my writing, knows my work ethic, etc. Since she isn't a core teacher I know I can't have her be one of my recs but is there a way that I could send in a supplemental recommendation from her? I’m going to email Admissions and see what they have to say but I thought I’d check in here first and see if anyone has done something like this. Thanks in advance!

i asked for two supplemental letters. i told the teachers to just submit the letters to our guidance office, and they sent them out to the school.
