I am planning to apply ED to JHU and was wondering about supplemental recommendations. The scientist with whom I've conducted a great amount of research is a Hopkins alum and wants to write a recommendation on my behalf. The JHU application doesnt have a supplemental rec. form, only one for teachers and high school counselors. Would it be appropriate for him to just attach a letter, or should he fill out a teacher form. I called the admissions office and they were not very helpful.

How much do you think it will have an impact the admission process? If it helps to add, I'm a co-author of a large-scale prostate cancer research project.

AdmissionsDaniel can probably give you the best answers, but if I were you, I would send the recommendation just as an additional letter. Not necessarily because it's from a Hopkins alum, but because it demonstrates independent scientific work. If you're a co-author, I'm guessing you played a decent part in the research and that definitely looks good. Plus, if you're applying as an engineering major, from what I understand, research experience and leadership are the types of things they look for in picking finalists for the Westgate scholarship i*.

We require all applicants to submit two letters ... one is from your guidance counselor and the second needs to be from a teacher. The forms for these recommendations are included with the JHU application or Common/Universal applications.

We will accept additional letters of recommendation, but we do request that you not submit more than 4 total letters of recommendation. Additional letters of recommendation can be sent in just as letters (no forms required) but should always include the applicant's full name, birth date, and high school.

As far as who should write you an additional letter of recommendation ... well that is the choice of each applicant. My only advice is that when submitting additional letters of recommendation they really should present an additional side of you to the Admissions committee.
