Recommendation Wanted for Son

My son is in his second semester of his junior year at a private high school. He has a 3.4 weighted GPA and a 3.1 unweighted GPA. His will take the SAT for the first time in March. Comparing the PSAT, he would probably score around (at least the first time) around a 1100. He has EC's that include tennis and community service. As you can see he is a good B to B+ student. His GPA improved in sophmore and junior year from freshman year.

Can anyone recommend a university in North Carolina/Virginia area (we live in the Raleigh area). He prefers a small/medium size university. Where do you think he would have a chance at acceptance and one that has a good reputation. The counselor has suggested UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, ECU with Wilmington and App State being more difficult for acceptance. He liked Elon during a visit; however, that is a Stretch.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Cathy, look at Christopher Newport and Lynchburg. Both are solid schools.

cathy, I sent you a PM..

My niece goes to Christopher Newport and really loves it there. She raves about it. It really sounds like a good fit for him. We are planning to include Christopher Newport in our visits. However, I hate to pay out of state tuition.

UNC Wilmington
UNC Ashville
Warren Wilson
NC State Raleigh
Appalachian St

Christopher Newport
Emory and Henry
George Mason
Hampden-Sydney
Hampton
Hollins
James Madison
Old Dominion
Randolph
Randolph-Macon
Virginia Commonwealth

I am a little more familiar with the NC schools. I think he would like NC State or Wilmington. I am just not so sure he would be accepted. NC State is becoming extremely difficult to get in.

Cathy, just to give you an idea about UNC Wilmington admissions, I know of somoene who was accepted last year with a 3.5 and an 1150 SAT. Don't know if that was weighted or unweighted though.

Thanks for the information poi. Those numbers are close.

High Point U?

It depends on what he applies for at NC State. I've known people who get into NC State with very similar stats...do you know his approximate class rank (top 10%, 20% etc)?

He attends a private catholic school in Raleigh and they do not rank.

He is pretty sure he will major in business. I think that is one of the harder colleges at NC State. I know engineering and design are tough also.

Your son would be an attractive male applicant at newly co-educational Randolph College (formerly Randolph-Macon Woman's College). Also how about some Catholic options: Marymount University (VA) and Belmont Abbey College (NC) and a little further afield Mount St. Mary's U. (MD), Wheeling Jesuit U. (WV), Spring Hill College (AL) and Southern Catholic College (GA)?

In Virginia, "Colleges That Change Lives" recommends "Emory & Henry" and Lynchburg. I strongly recommend you investigate these two. I think Emory & Henry sounds great if you don't mind being in a more rural area. (Get the book Colleges That Change Lives from the bookstore or see what you can find on the CTCL website. These are some amazing schools that are not too hard to get into, and any college that is listed in CTCL has a good reputation among people who are familiar with the big names as well as the not-so-well-known gems.)

One of S1's friends, a football player, attends Emory&Henry. I hear that students get a lot of personal interaction (help is readily available if needed) with the profs. E&H has just over 1000 students.

Lynchburg might be a possibility as my son loves to ski and Wintergreen is only about an hour from Lynchburg. He is a pretty quiet kid, and I don't see him going too far from home. I believe Lynchburg is only about 2 hours from our home.

He takes the SAT on March 1, and we will have a better idea after that. He will take it again in May or June this year. His choices will either expand or diminish after we see how he does.

Mount St. Mary's University in Emmittsburg, Maryland the nations's second oldest Catholic college after Georgetown, has skiing 15 minutes away from campus at Ski Liberty.
